Yesterday I had my first round of PRP injections for my torn hip labrum. This mixture, called platelet rich plasma, is made up of my white blood cells and platelets, which contain a concentrated amount of healing growth factors. PRP is a fairly new procedure, but the goal is for my labrum to regenerate. This growing process takes weeks. If there is no improvement after several weeks, I will do another round of injections. I was not afraid of the procedure itself. I trust my doctor and his team. Sedation doesn’t freak me out. I was afraid of the recovery. My blood was drawn yesterday morning, and then spun in a centrifuge to create the PRP. I was sedated and then the PRP was injected into my hip joint and all the ligaments surrounding my hip. I woke up and was surprised that even the tiniest movement caused excruciating pain. My hubby had to support me walking to the car. The rest of yesterday was pretty rough. Getting in and out of bed, rolling over, sitting down - all super painful. I couldn’t lift my leg out of the car or into the bed. I started using a crutch to walk around last night. Sleeping was uncomfortable. Today was a bit better. I can move my leg more, but it still hurts a lot. There is visible swelling on the front and side of my hip. I’ve been mainly in bed - working, sleeping and resting. I get up to move around...at turtle pace, every so often. I can’t take any anti-inflammatory meds for 12 weeks while this regenerative process happens. On the bright side, now I know what a difference NSAIDs make for my chronic neck pain. I also can’t use ice for the next 2 days. Heat hurt yesterday but today it feels good. Tonight I was able to shower and now I feel like a new person. Thanks to everyone who has reached out. Ok, as much as I am excited for summer, I am also overwhelmed and stressed. There is so much happening at once, so much to keep track of. Don’t get me wrong, it’s going to be a fun summer and I am grateful for all the activities. Just feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I can’t wait for high school to be over so Paul can be home for daddy day care. Then momming, working and taking care of my body will be a bit more manageable.
