Top light is my preferred pattern. I have a lot of reasons for this. With only a slight change in actor or source position, you can have high-key beauty light, or low-key pure top. Motivation is incredibly easy with soft top light. It appears directionless and can be used as a 360 degree complementary fill light for more directional sources (like windows or lamps). Save for very early and very late in the day, it is also the most motivated EXT lighting pattern. If properly balanced in intensity, soft top light will almost always sell. This is a key reason why it’s the go-to pattern for lighting actors on green screen..

In certain interiors, it can also be the quickest and easiest pattern to set up. If you have low white ceilings, a simple flood-bounce off the ceiling can take care of most of your needs. The hotspot of bounce light can be shaped with flags or barn doors and moved to slightly different angles to cover different actors or vary the way it falls. Top light is extremely versatile. I don’t use it for everything, but I certainly favor it..

In a very low-key implementation, it can absolutely draw out feeling from an actor's face. The only challenge is making sure the eyes aren't silenced by too much shadow. Catch light is an essential tool when trying to shape the “mask of sorrow.” Top light can turn the eyes into waterfalls of darkness. When you’re wide you can leave the eyes black. But in close up it becomes weird and nuances of performance can get lost. So a large, soft, and very dim fill source should be brought in close to the talent. This can add a barely perceptible bit of fill, and totally revive the eyes by implanting a large reflection on the pupil..

Remember, an expression is a pattern of facial features. Patterns of lighting can manipulate the patterns of the face. Lighting isn’t just a matter of mood. It should help your actors.
