Part of the restored cedarwood coffin of the commander and scribe of the army troops Ipi-ha-ishutef. It dates to the 9th or 10th Dynasty (circa 2081-2064 BCE) during the First Intermediate Period. We see one of a pair of eyes carved and painted at the head end of the coffin's exterior. The pair was positioned opposite the eyes of the deceased as his mummy lay within on its left side (A photo of the coffin is in the first comment). This 'Eye of Horus' was believed to allow the soul of the deceased to see the rising sun, a symbol of eternal rebirth. The coffin (OIM E12072) is now in the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago, Chicago, USA. Photo: The Oriental Institute
In one version of the myth of 'The Contendings of Horus and Seth', Horus had both his eyes gouged out. In other versions he lost only his left eye. Because in all versions his eyesight was eventually magically cured, his eye came to symbolize healing and wholeness. It was also used as a protective amulet, symbolizing strength and perfection.
Many modern Egyptians continue to believe in the potency of the Eye of Horus. They use variants of the symbol as jewelry, and some paint such variants on their vehicles or marine vessels as a means of protection against the ill-will of or envy by others.

The funerary mask of an unnamed high-ranking official who flourished at the end of the 18th Dynasty (circa 1331-1292 BCE). The two rows of golden rings he wears just below his neck are a sign that he was rewarded for his services as these were typically presented during that period to deserving officials. The mask is made of a wooden frame that is plastered and painted on linen glass paste.
This stunning piece (E.6884) is now in the Art & History Museum, Brussels, Belgium. Photo: The Art & History Museum.
