The injury resulted in her being a paraplegic (she doesn’t have any feeling or function in her hind legs, tail, or going to the bathroom) due to a complete spinal severance injury. She was surrendered to animal control and would have been euthanized. Thanks to @thecatlvt for putting the word out that Raven needed help! Raven is a free spirit, a sassy spit fire, & the sweetest baby who deserves the world. In honor of @riefosters new babygirl, we thought we’d share Raven’s story for Throwback Thursday! Since being blessed enough to have her story told by @thedodo, so many people have shown their love & support for her! I am reposting this from the night i first held her! I want to highlight that babies such as Raven & Rie’s new foster are WORTH saving. They thrive & have a great quality of life ❤️ ................ #Repost @fostercatsfordays ・・・ A few days ago, Ellen (@thecatlvt) posted an urgent SOS about a partially paralyzed, 5 week old kitten who needed help in a small rural town in Georgia. Now, most of the time when I see one of those posts, it’s in a place that I can’t help—but this time, I could actually help! I jumped at the chance to help this baby who would have likely been euthanized if she wasn’t rescued. Little Raven came to me late last night. Her paralysis came from a dog bite, and she had an open wound on her side from the attack. Her bottom was swollen, & she clearly needed help expressing her bladder & bowels. Her paralysis kept her from being able to potty on her own. Raven was in such a state that we immediately headed to the ER vet... I needed an expert to show me how to help her potty, & her open wound had me worried. The vet examined her, determined that she has no feeling, reflexes, or movement in her back left leg, & that she has very limited sensation in her back right leg. The vet also confirmed that she is not able to urinate or defecate on her own, and she will need to have her bowels expressed by hand multiple times a day. The vet recommended euthanasia.... I was absolutely floored! We didn’t save Raven from euthanasia in rural Georgia just to euthanize her in Atlanta. We decided to take her to a specialist instead to make a fully informed decision. The vet appreciated our position and taught me how to express her bladder and rectum before we went home. Once home I gave her a bath, gave her a treat, & figured out a way to create a diaper! I had one left over from my NICU rotation & it actually fit her! Sitting there watching her exist was absolute confirmation that I made the right choice. #betheirvoice #throwbackthursday

So I never explained the events of 2 nights ago... I had just gotten home from work, showered, and come downstairs. All of a sudden I had this feeling... I turned to fostered & said “I need you to go check on Salem. Now.” He said “okay, I will in a minute unless I urgently need to!? (With a confused look, knowing I hadn’t been in there yet)” ... I replied with “i don’t know I just need you to now. Please I have a weird feeling” ... so, being the wonderful husband & FD he is, he didn’t hesitate & went straight up to check on her.... Not even 30 seconds later, I hear pounding foot steps on the ceiling followed by “MARLENAAA!!! Come here!” I walked in to find Salem walking around meowing, the bed in the bathtub covered in blood, & 2 little nuggets. Immediately we noticed he black baby wasn’t moving... he was cold too... I scooped him up & started drying him off & trying to get him warmed up... there’s a saying that always floats in my mind about newborns/young babies “cold babies don’t eat”... I knew he wouldn’t latch until we warmed him up! So, we got a pet safe heating pad & I kept him in a blanket wrapped in the heating pad, stimulating him occasionally. It took a good bit of time, but he finally came around! I don’t think Salem had JUST delivered, I think she did sometimes within the hour before we arrived... I think she heard us moving around when I got home & was excited ... which is maybe part of the reason little black baby was still so wet (she had already eaten the placenta & chewed the cord).
