Being a 2 mom family, we often get asked what Oliver calls us. From the beginning we decided Bri would be Mama and I would be Mommy
.
Since language comes a little harder for Ollie, it took awhile for him to say Mom. Eventually (after much practice) screaming ‘aaaa’ in our direction turned into Mama or a short lil Mom to get the trick done
.
We’ve been trying SO HARD and going through saying Mommy together for a long time - and y’all it finally happened!! he’s been saying Mommy (prompted) & this mom heart couldn’t be any happier!
.
And just to put the icing on the cake the other night Bri and I were laying on the floor and he said Mommy, and looked right at me. It was if right then, he knew he has a Mama and Mommy. ❤️ It was the first time he did unprompted, and I honestly could just scream (or bawl) from the rooftops!
.
Oliver works SO hard for what a lot of us take for granted everyday-
.
-And everyday he is climbing mountains! ⛰ The best view comes after the hardest climb. We can’t wait to see what views are in store for us little man ❤️
⭐️Does your child have to say the word correctly when communicating with you every time⁉️ Absolutely not❌! Of course it’s still important for you to model the word you would like your child to say. However, if it is too difficult to say, offer them alternatives‼️ Communication does not only involve producing words, it also includes:⭐️
.
.
.
✔️pointing to a picture/object ✔️gesturing ✔️sign language ✔️using a meaningful sound (mmm/more) ✔️using the first consonant/syllable of a word (buh/bubble)
✔️singing or chanting
.
.
.
& remember to give them praise when they do any of these above things! Thanks for creating this @letsplayslp !

Learning how to swallow again or express oneself successfully are just two of the incredibly important life skills that the Craig Speech-Language Pathologists work on with patients. The therapists work collaboratively across departments to facilitate the growth of cognitive and behavioral skills, learning strategies, communication abilities, and swallow functions needed to achieve the goals of our patients and their families. This #BetterHearingandSpeechMonth, thank you to all of the amazingly skilled, compassionate, and dedicated therapists who make the department what it is! #BHSM
