Francesco Pavan is a master of traditional goldsmithing. Part of the Padua School and a student of Mario Pinton, his material handling and treatment is unique. Chequita Nahar at Present - 40 years of Galerie Marzee - Anniversary-exhibition until 10 August 2019 As her anniversary gift, Chequita has given Marie-José a memory box in recollection of her time at Ravary. It was during one of these workshops that the two forged their working relationship, encouraging Chequita to continue making jewellery. Lined with a fragment of wallpaper from Ravary, inside is a brooch made with carnelian – again, from Ravary - concealed in strips of tape coated in white bronze. The jewellery of Chequita Nahar reflects a fusion of influences from an artist who grew up between two cultures – Suriname and the Netherlands. Ethnicity, symbolism and visual language have always fascinated her. Her materials are porcelain, wood, silver, cotton, string – priceless not because of their material value but their symbolic power. The forms are primal, emblematic without becoming folkloric. They speak of customs and community, stories and the power of jewellery as a communicator. She is at the beginning of a new body of work and the piece she shows here marks the beginning of her explorations. Surprisingly light, the pine forms that bring to mind something altogether more industrial, are coated with white bronze and strung simply on elastic. Carla Nuis at Present - 40 years of Galerie Marzee - Anniversary-exhibition until 10 August 2019 The inspiration for Carla Nuis’ meditative, painstaking and technically adroit jewellery comes from many places – from childhood drawings to classic retail jewellery chains, wedding rings and pearl necklaces. Since her MPhil at the Royal College of Art in London she has explored the possibilities of paper-thin hollow forms in gold and silver. Etched or cut with scissors from metal sheet and laser-welded, these meticulous constructions deceive the eye, appearing simple, solid and heavy where they are in fact complex, hollow, fragile and light like the ‘jewels’ set on her FlowerRing, which mimic a cluster of cut stones, rendered in silver. For Marie-José, 14 tiny discs of 24 carat gold confetti, one for each year of their artistic cooperation.
