Is this a snake, or a worm, or something entirely different? This mysterious pink creature is actually a lizard. A Mexican Mole Lizard, to be exact, scientifically known as Bipes biporus. These lizards have diminutive front limbs used for digging the tunnels where they spend most of their lives, and no back limbs. Being over a year old and about 2 feet long Jane Wick is almost past the “rapid growth” phase of her life. With the end of that phase comes the difficult battle of keeping this species lean, strong, and mentally sharp. If you search the hashtags #savannahmonitor #boscmonitor and the like you’ll see a lot of animals that are unbelievably obese. In the wild they have to travel around several acres per day just to hunt for small insects. In captivity they are often kept in small cages and fed high-fat foods from bowls. I have always been a big fan of tong feeding in order to bond with monitors but equally important is allowing a monitor to forage. Jane’s enclosure is a living #bioactive ecosystem with over 1000 pounds of living soil. Sometimes grass and mushrooms grow in the cooler corners of the enclosure (they don’t last long, she digs a lot) and along with the diverse plants there is also a diverse group of invertebrates that live in her cage. There are springtails, beetles, and a variety of worms including mealworms and earthworms. In this clip you can catch a glimpse of what Jane does during non-feeding days. She forages for the majority of the day just to find a handful of worms. This type of stimulation keeps her body active and lean and her mind sharp and keen. I highly recommend this style of feeding for all keepers of adult monitors. Monitors are far more susceptible to boredom than many other reptiles and this keeps her busy for hours on end.
