My experience with meditations and heart coherence - Part 1

I have been meditating since 4 years now (initially with the app @headspace) and it immediately worked on my pain levels and fatigue. It was like I was hitting the reset button on my body (in real I was turning on my parasympathetic nervous system, and allowing it to repair and rebuild my body) - and it made my days easier to deal with pain and fatigue.

I got introduced to Joe Dispenza (@drjoedispenza) at the end of last year and I started doing his meditations while reading his AMAZING book “becoming supernatural”. There is so much to say about this book that I don’t even know where to start. Do yourself a favor and just read it.
One of the main topics that Joe Dispenza talks about is heart coherence ❤️. Heart coherence is when your heart beats in a coherent fashion, sending coherent waves to your brain who then feels “safe” and send signals to your entire body to start relaxing and rebuilding. That’s when the magic happens. You are in heart coherence when you are experiencing love, joy, gratitude... as opposed to hate, resentment, frustration, pain... which sends incoherent signals and puts your body in a constant fight or flight mode, taxing and weakening your adrenals along the way.
The more you are in heart coherence, the more you are putting your body back into balance and ultimately heading towards great health.
Heart coherence can be measured by a value called “HRV”: Heart Rate Variability. Simply put, the more coherent your heart, the healthier you are, the higher your HRV. It usually is ranked between 20 and 100 (100 being top health). I purchased a biofeedback tool (I’ll talk more about which one) and it was no surprise to see that my HRV was at 28 in average (so quite low), with moments in the day where I was below 10. .

“Do what your heart tells you to do.” Have you heard this statement before? Every time I say it, I giggle privately to myself, because from psychological perspective, this simple statement is actually expressing a complex biological given.

Simply put, your brain automatically responds to what your heart is communicating. And if you can grow awareness of and adjust the rhythm of your heart, you can organically improve your overall state of being. Improving the rhythm of your heart is linked to improvements in memory and focus, decreasing anxiety and depression, and increasing resilience.

You can improve your heart rhythm pattern through self-awareness, meditation/mindfulness, biofeedback, breathing retraining, and other forms of self-care. Pictured are sessions of heart rate biofeedback that I did on myself during meditation sessions. Can you see how the “waves” of my heart rhythm become less erratic, more predictable, longer, and smoother with 1 month of self-awareness and meditative training? That’s a healing heart. So beautiful.

Your body has the incredible capacity for moving into wellness. But you must create the space for healing to occur with self-awareness and practice. Healing will NOT happen WITHOUT INTENTION.
