Just holding a bouquet of peonies-my favorite because they were my wedding flowers . I wanted to circle back and address some questions I received about oral contraceptives. Many of you reached out to me with concerns about your teenage daughters being prescribed oral contraceptives for irregular periods and other hormonal concerns. While I am certainly not an expert in gynecology, I can very much empathize with those of you with reservations on going on “the pill” to fix hormones. This was also part of my story-I was recommended oral contraceptives as a 15 year old because of irregular periods. Based on my training, I think the idea of using synthetic hormones to fix hormones is narrow minded. In fact, the pill does not normalize hormones it shuts them down! There are various hormonal cascades and negative feedback loops that the pill turns off. The pill simply masks symptoms. In my opinion, it is crucial to look at WHY the hormones are imbalanced in the first place. Some of the main things that come to mind are-diet and nutrient status, essential fatty acid intake, stress levels, blood sugar handling, exposure to endocrine disrupting toxins, liver function, and gut function. I wish, as a teen (and young adult for that matter) that someone would have looked at these pieces for me. . Back to the peonies-they remind me of my wedding day. Without much thought I went on the “mini” birth control pill as a 21 year old in preparation to be married. Y’all, I was completely bananas (see previous posts on why). It is God’s grace that my sweet husband put up with the crazy for those few months while I was on this medication. I've seen this being shared around, and I am happy to see that it has the correct information on women's fertile window. It is crazy that we are expected to take artificial hormones and change ourselves to avoid pregnancy. ⚡ I do think that the fertility awareness method is the answer to some of this problem.
