This is one of the most common questions I get asked in clinic. Ovulation is SO important for our overall health because it is the way that we make hormones. Without ovulation, you will not produce progesterone which is essential for counterbalancing the effects of oestrogen in the first half of the cycle. Think of progesterone as that comforting best friend you can dump your problems on when the going gets tough who can provide you with clarity and peace of mind. Without her we are frazzled and moody, our periods are more painful (or non-existent) and our libido takes a dive.⠀ ⠀ Ovulation is both a key indicator of health, and creator of health. When something is out of balance in our body or lives (high stress, poor diet, medication, travel, poor sleep etc), our body often responds by shutting down ovulation. When we are in peak physical health, our periods will arrive smoothly on time. Furthermore, regular ovulation results in optimal health due to the natural production of hormones which are crucial for moods and periods as discussed above, but also for maintaining our bone and heart health. ⠀ ⠀ So if ovulation is so important, how do we know if we are ovulating? Firstly, if you are currently taking the oral contraceptive pill, your are not ovulating. The pill works by shutting down the communication between the brain and ovaries which means no egg is being released. The bleed you experience when you take the sugar pills on the pill is simply a 'break through bleed' in response to a withdrawal from the hormones, but is not a real period as you have not released an egg. ⠀ ⠀ What about other forms of birth control like the Mirena IUD, Implanon or the copper IUD? Some women still ovulate occasionally whilst on the Mirena IUD and it is thought to 'partially' suppress ovulation. Implanon works by shutting down ovulation like the pill. The copper IUD however does not shut down ovulation but prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus which prevents sperm from entering the fallopian tubes. ⠀ ⠀ What about those of us who don't take hormonal contraceptives? ⠀ (two key signs to look out for: continued in comments) ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️

Why does birth control clear up acne and why does it come back once women stop taking it? PART 2 of 2 (see the previous picture) Soooo why does acne come back (sometimes worse) after stopping birth control? This happens because androgens are no longer suppressed and your body has no idea what’s going on as it attempts to bring everything back into balance. Post-pill acne can occur within a few weeks, but often peaks 3-6 months after you stop taking it, so if you’re going through this, its completely normal even though is freaking sucks. That was my skin approx 3-4 months after stopping birth control and this is it now. Scarring usually takes longer to clear than the acne itself but there are ways you can get your hormones back into balance quickly so you don’t suffer too much from the repercussions! I’ll do another post about the causes of high androgens and how to reduce them naturally, bringing our hormones back into balance and getting rid of acne for GOOD! But for now, I hope this helped you understand birth control and its effect on both the body and the skin. I know acne is frustrating, I dealt with it for many years and is why I am so passionate about sharing this information, in hopes that it helps my ladies better understand their bodies!! . #acnetreatment #naturalremedies #acnehelp #acnefree #birthcontrol #birthcontrolproblems #acnescars #hormoneimbalance #hormonalacne #postpillacne

Turmeric is one of my favourite recommendations for heavy, painful periods, endometriosis and acne. As you've probably heard by now, turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory spice which decreases our levels of inflammatory mediators which cause pain during our periods. ⠀ ⠀ What you may not be aware of is that turmeric also reduces heavy menstrual flow and is anti-proliferative (meaning it stops excessive cell production) which is great news for growth-related conditions like endometriosis and fibroids. ⠀ ⠀ Turmeric also helps to block androgen receptors, which reduces the amount of hormones like testosterone causing acne and unwanted hair growth. ⠀ ⠀ Turmeric for the win for so many hormone and menstrual-related conditions! I love making a turmeric latte like this one using coconut milk, some black pepper (helps with body's absorption of turmeric), a pinch of cinnamon and a dash of maple syrup. To get the full therapeutic benefits of turmeric though if you are suffering from the conditions about, it is best taken in a high strength curcumin supplement which you can ask your natural health provider about ⠀ ⠀ Tag someone who might benefit from more of this golden spice in their life! ⠀ ___________________⠀ #birthcontrolproblems #hormonebalance #hormoneimbalance #hormonalacne #hormonalhealth #hormonalbalance #hormonehealth #estrogen #progesterone #periodpower #periodproblems #periodpositive #periodpains #periodpainsucks #menstruationmatters #womenshormonehealth #balancehormonesnaturally #periodtips #turmeric #turmericlate #curcumin

Your weight does not define your beauty. Who you are on the inside, your soul, defines your beauty. You need to really accept and believe this. Squeezing your tight little ass into a tiny pair of jeans is nice and all, but it doesn't mean shit to anyone. People like you (or don't like you) because of who you are, not because of your weight. Your weight loss journey is about more than just losing weight, it's about gaining a fuller life. It's about destroying what has destroyed you and becoming the very best version of yourself that you can be, inside and out #overcomeobstacles #weightloss #ilovefood #birthcontrolproblems #girlpower #fitness

We love this comic from the incredible @jamiesquire_ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 'I drew this when I was thinking about the effects the pill had on me (and many of the people I've spoken to) that the doctor didn't warn me about. If anything I was encouraged to go on the pill, without any awareness of how the balance of my hormones could affect me mentally. Aside from headaches, horrible breast pain and nausea, the pill very slowly altered my emotional state. I felt numb all the time, like the volume had been turned down, I stopped showing or feeling emotion, I couldn't be affectionate or empathise in the same way I used to. And it crept up on me so slowly that I never associated it with pill, I thought it was just who I had become.
