With jet black culms and feathery green leaves, this clump of black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra), planted in my narrow side garden more than 25 years, now towers nearly 10 meters, taller than my two-story house. New culms emerge green and gradually turn black in one to three years. There is always a contrast of light and dark culms balanced by slender, dark green leaves. This bamboo is initially slow to spread, through when mature, it can be quite vigorous and invasive, as it spreads quickly by underground rhizomes. I control its spread by sawing down the older bamboos and using them as a privacy screen by strapping them to my wire fence (see next photos of my natural bamboo fence). Black bamboo makes a handsome and outstanding specimen, if well cared for, and can be the focal point of any garden. It can also be shaped to form a dense hedge for privacy which was why I planted it in the first place.#minsgarden #plantsmakepeoplehappy #blackbamboo #bamboo #bamboofence #garden #gardening
Long known for their often intricate and technical designs, Fred and Janis Tate also did a lot of work titled ‘black bamboo’. I loved this collection as it could equally work worn by men or women. If anyone knows what they are up to these days let me know please. They no longer seem to be showing their work and may have retired. A wonderful legacy that’s for sure. #fredandjanistate #blackbamboo #silver #gold #bangle #unisex #jewelryblogger #jewelry #bijoux #schmuck #joyeria #joyas #jewellery #design #handcrafted #inspiration #nature #organic #beauty #contemporaryjewellery
