Born in 1844 in Abomey, Béhanzin was the eleventh king of Dahomey from 1889 to 1894. His name, Kondo, was changed to Béhanzin after he succeeded to his father Glèlè. His personal symbols were the shark, the egg, and two coconut palm trees - It is important to note that the words Behanzin & Dahomey are both westernized versions of Gbè han zin = life holds an egg or the egg of the world, and Dan xo min = in the belly of the snake. It can also be linked to the egg of the universe called Aki Ngoss by the Fang people of Gabon. Béhanzin chose the shark as totemic animal and took as motto “the angry shark comes to trouble the helm” illustrating his willingness to defend his ancestors’ land against the French. Under Béhanzin reign, Dahomey was one of the most powerful kingdoms of West Africa, deriving its power mostly from trade but also from its army which was one of the strongest and best-organized in the region. This army included the famous Amazons, also known as Ahosi or N’nonmiton (our mothers) in fon. They were his bodyguards and he was always surrounded by them during his expeditions.
