Reposted from @mfalme_hatari_maarifa_historia - In 2010 the renewed interest in Gil Scott-Heron made it a busy last couple of years for him, including a tour of Europe, during which he fell ill. He died on May 27, 2011, in New York City, a place whose tribulations and ecstasies he’d so wonderfully sound-tracked. His death led to an unresolved squabble for his estate between some of his children, and he’s survived by a son, Rumal Rackley, and daughters Raquiyah Kelly-Heron, Gia Scott-Heron and Chegianna Newton. Kanye West — who had both sampled Scott-Heron and been sampled by him — performed at his memorial. Chuck D of Public Enemy — who had borrowed the singer’s "the revolution will not be televised" phrase for the intro of their 1987 album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back — tweeted: “We do what we do and how we do, because of you.” #WeLoveblackpoets #BlackHistoryofMay27 #ThisWeekInBlackHistory #TodayInBlackHistory #BlackHistoryofApril1 #BlackHistoryofApril - #regrann

Iconic Childhood Actor Todd Bridges! #LifeImitatesArt #ToddBridges was actually terrorized by white supremacists in his neighborhood in 1983. He faced sniper shots, and his car was stolen and set on fire. Frightened by the assault, he started carrying a gun. One day he was pulled over by police for a traffic violation, and was charged with carrying a loaded, concealed weapon. He had to pay a $240 fine for the offense. #WeLoveBlackActors #ToddAnthonyBridges is an American actor and comedian, best known for his role as Willis Jackson in the hit TV sitcom ‘Diff’rent Strokes’ that he portrayed for eight years. He entered the entertainment industry when he was just a four-year-old, appearing as a model for a magazine ad. When he was nine, he made his acting debut in a commercial with his family. The brief role led to more acting assignments, including his appearance on the TV show ‘Barney Miller’ and a role in the movie ‘Katherine’. However, like many other child actors, he too ran into trouble with the law as a youngster. He became involved with drugs and firearms as a young man which affected his career as well. Although rehab helped him kick his substance abuse problems, it didn't help him control his violent tendencies. However, life changed for him when he turned to Christianity, and founded the Todd Bridges Youth Foundation, a non-profit youth body in Los Angeles that provides sports, computer training, and acting courses for children. Soon he saw resurgence in his acting career. He then wrote a book called ‘Killing Willis’, and appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss his acting career, drug addiction, and trouble with law. Todd Bridges was born on May 27, 1965 in San Francisco, California, to Betty Alice Pryor and James Bridges, Sr. While his mother is an actress, director, and manager, his father is a talent agent. At the age of four, he got his first modeling job posing for a magazine ad. When he was nine, he did a Jell-O commercial with his family. The gig led to more acting work for him. #WeLoveBlackCinema #BlackKnowledge #BlackBoyJoy #BlackExcellence #BlackHistoryofMay27 #BlackActors #TodayInBlackHistory #ThisWeekInBlackHistory #BlackHisyory365

Rememberig Lisa Lopes! #LisaLeftEyeLopes The most flamboyant member of the award-winning, multi-platinum contemporary R&B trio TLC, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is a singer and rapper who died tragically in 2002 at age 30. In addition to the chart-topping TLC hits "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty," she released a solo album, Supernova (2001), overseas shortly before her untimely death. Born Lisa Lopes on May 27, 1971, in Philadelphia, PA, she moved to Atlanta, GA, in 1990 and co-founded TLC shortly thereafter. Upon signing to LaFace Records, the Atlanta-based label of R&B hitmakers Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Antonio "L.A." Reid, TLC recorded their full-length album debut with producers Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, and Marley Marl, in addition to Babyfaceand Reid. The resulting album, Ooooooohhh.... On the TLC Tip (1992), was a break-out hit that spawned a few Top Ten hits ("Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg," "What About Your Friends," "Baby-Baby-Baby") representative of the trio's early style, informed by new jack swing as well as hip-hop. From the get-go, #LisaLopes was the most flamboyant member of TLC. In early promotional appearances she famously covered the left eye of her glasses with an unwrapped condom, and she was likewise well known for her oversized hats, colorful clothing, and numerous tattoos. Moreover, in the wake of TLC's break-out success, Lopes began dating football star Andre Rison, a wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons. The relationship was volatile and took a fateful turn on June 9, 1994, when Lopes put a bunch of Rison's shoes in a bathtub, set them aflame in a fit of vengefulness, and unintentionally burned down his mansion in the process. She was consequently sentenced to five years of probation and a stint in rehab. #BlackGirlMagic✨#BlackGirlMagic #TodayInBlackExcellence #WeLoveBlackEntertainers #WeLoveBlackHipHopLegends #BlackHistoryofApril25 #BlackHistoryofMay #BlackHistoryofMay27 #ThisWeekInBlackHistory #TodayInBlackHistory #BlackHistory365 - #regrann

Who was Jonior Parker? #JuniorParker was a product of the fertile postwar Memphis blues circuit whose wonderfully understated harp style was personally mentored by none other than regional icon Sonny Boy Williamson. Herman Parker, Jr. only traveled in the best blues circles from the outset. He learned his initial licks from Williamson and gigged with the mighty Howlin' Wolf while still in his teens. Like so many young blues artists, Little Junior (as he was known then) got his first recording opportunity from talent scout Ike Turner, who brought him to Modern Records for his debut session as a leader in 1952. It produced the lone single "You're My Angel," with Turnerpounding the 88s and Matt Murphy deftly handling guitar duties. Parker and his band, the Blue Flames (including Floyd Murphy, Matt's brother, on guitar), landed at Sun Records in 1953 and promptly scored a hit with their rollicking "Feelin' Good" (something of a Memphis response to John Lee Hooker's primitive boogies). Later that year, Little Junior cut a fiery "Love My Baby" and a laid-back "Mystery Train" for Sun, thus contributing a pair of future rockabilly standards to the Sun publishing coffers (Hayden Thompson revived the former, Elvis Presley the latter). A brain tumor tragically silenced Junior Parker's magic-carpet voice in late 1971 before he reached his 40th birthday. In 2001, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. #TodayInBlackExcellence #WeLoveBlackMusicians #BlackHistoryofMay #BlackHistoryofMay27 #ThisWeekInBlackHistory #TodayInBlackHistory

*Fair skinned black woman born into slavery in 1861. #BlackWomanYouShouldKnow #VictoriaEarleSmith was an accomplished journalist, author, lecturer, clubwoman, social worker, and missionary.  She was born on May 27, 1861 in Fort Valley, Georgia, to Caroline Smith, a slave, and a man who was believed to be the family’s master.  Caroline fled the plantation at the start of the Civil War, but returned after emancipation and regained custody of Victoria and her sister.  The family eventually moved to New York City, where Victoria excelled in public school until financial and family conditions made it necessary for her to quit and go into domestic service.  Victoria continued her education by using the library of her employer, special studies and other opportunities to improve herself. When she was 18 years old she married William Matthews and they had one son, Lamartine. In “The Value of Race Literature” (1895), she supported the importance of collecting the writings by and about African American women and men.  She was also noted for her effective lectures such as, “The Awakening of the Afro-American Woman”. In civic areas, Mrs. Matthews founded the Woman’s Loyal Union in 1892.  She was also one of the leaders in supporting the antilynching crusade of Ida B. Wells.  In 1895 Matthews helped found the National Federation of Afro-American Women and was later instrumental when this organization and the National Colored Women’s League merged with the National Association of Colored Women (1896). The death of her son at sixteen sent #VictoriaMatthews into deep mourning.  But she turned her grief into a vigilant social welfare organization for boys and girls.  In 1897 she established the White Rose Industrial Association in New York City.  The Association provided a home for girls and young single women while instructing them in domestic skills.  Several women of note assisted Matthews at the home including #AliceRuthMooreDunbar-Nelson and #HallieQBrown.#BlackHistoryofMay #LightBrightAndDamnNearWhite #VictoriaMatthews #WeLoveBlackActivist #WeLoveBlackScholars #BlackHistoryofMay27 #BlackHistoryofMarch10 #ThisWeekInBlackHistory
