Severe bladder sludging can cause urinary problems too. While it’s normal for all bunnies and guinea pigs to produce occasional cloudy urine, it does indicate that the diet could be too high in calcium/minerals. Leaving sludge (which is basically sandy particles) can cause stones to form in the urinary tract. Symptoms can range from simply peeing out of the litter box, to dribbling urine and staining the legs and bum with urine, to bloody urine, to being completely unable to pass urine! Clover , Angelique's beloved bunny ,was in this week with bladder sludge (also called hypercalcinuria ) In rabbits this is a thickening of the urine with calcium salts and as a result ,therefore doesn't flow as normal. Clover had sludge as well as small bladder stones blocking his urethra. He was catheterised and his bladder was flushed to remove excess sludge and stones. He is doing much better but will still have to be closely monitored for any signs of future bladder issues as it can reoccur. Lucky for Clover his mom , Angelique, is a vet nurse so he is in the very best hands at home as well. Sorry we haven’t posted lately. Poor Milo wasn’t feeling well so we went to the Vet and found out Milo has #bladdersludge. It was a scary few days of extraction appointments and syringe feeding him critical care. Fortunately he seems to be doing much better now. He’s eating on his own and is back to being a bundle of energy. We still have a few more days of metacam and more extractions but fingers crossed we’ll be able to avoid surgery. Victoria is fine and has been Milo’s protector and moral support during vet visits. The key was catching it early and going to the vet right away. So as of right now #mrbuttonsbun and #misslayabun are on Oxbow rabbit pellets which from what I’ve been taught is a very good food. but Buttons has bladder sludge ( as I discovered after talking to the vet) and needs to be moved to grain free food, I had to ask a bunny group about this one and so when I’m done with my bag of Oxbow, I’m putting them on Sherwood pets rabbit pellets. Hopefully it will eliminate his bladder issues and I’ll have a happier bun. Thankfully the sludge has not caused any serious issues but I need to nip it in the butt now to avoid any. Ningxia is great for pets too! One of our beloved Guinea Pigs, has a predisposition for calcium buildup in her bladder and kidneys so we are protecting her urinary track with a little Ningxia.
