This is #Day16 of my #100DaysOfInkPatterns where I make ink prints and patterns daily for 100 days. The theme for Days 11-20 is diamond tile patterns. ⠀⠀ I call this one "TURKEY SCUFFLE". See how it looks like it has feet, black feathers and beaks all over the place, like how it looks when cartoon characters get in a fight. Other interpretations are open, as usual. ⠀⠀ Today, I got really burned out from daily art-making. I've honestly made up to Day 25 of the challenge. There was so much energy at the start, but it's dwindling now. And all the amazing stuff on my feed from the creatives I follow don't help at all. My mediocrity is right up against my face, and I feel there's still so much to learn until I reach the point of satisfaction--if I ever reach it at all. ⠀⠀ And so to relieve stress, I went shopping today. I got plastic sleeves for my sketchbooks, a clearbook, and some China-made textile ink, which I hope would work well despite cheapness (Speedball was out of stock). This is #Day15 of my #100DaysOfInkPatterns where I make ink prints and patterns daily for 100 days. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "BLIND EYE". When I first made this concept (swipe to see my ink sketch), I intended it to have a vertical orientation such that the diamond is tall instead of squat. I decided on the horizontal orientation cos it makes room for more story -- the diamonds now look like blind eyes squinting to make out what they see. Or Ninja Turtles wearing pacifiers. Or whatever. It's all good! This is #Day20 of my #100DaysOfInkPatterns where I make ink prints and patterns daily for 100 days. Today is the last day for the diamond tile pattern trend! Making my first stamp collection was a rich learning experience. I'm particularly pleased at how I managed to have a neat and organized process so quickly. Hopefully in the future I could refine it further and use more types of inks, blocks, and even color. ⠀ This last tile motif is called "BUDAPEST". One of the tiles was surrounded by polka dots until I cut them out because they looked off. Swipe to see "CHEERY", the tile's ugly past life. I'm glad about how it turned out. This is #Day18 of my #100DaysOfInkPatterns where I make ink prints and patterns daily for 100 days. The theme for Days 11-20 is diamond tile patterns. ⠀⠀ "ROOKIE" - For the longest time this Red Velvet (KPop group) song has been stuck in my head. I could not stop mentally singing it especially when I was making this tile. Must be tough for our favorite Korean girls to sing "rookie rookie" while being unable to prounounce the letter 'r'. ⠀⠀ My tools: a manicure cuticle trimmer and an X-acto knife ⠀⠀ ~ JOURNAL TIME ~ ⠀⠀ So I'm reading Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death. I'm just going to go straight to discussion: ⠀⠀ The main argument of the book is "The form in which ideas are expressed affects what those ideas will be". Postman said that any medium (eg. a TV program, a novel, a meme) has a resonance -- a personality, a package of metaphors that's tagged along with it, a set of biases. Much like how a typeface can speak its own voice regardless of what the text is saying. The medium has a life of its own and has the ability to present a certain truth in a way that alters the truth's meaning. He said, "Truth does not, and never has, come unadorned. It must appear in its proper clothing or it is not acknowledged..." ⠀⠀ Of course cultures differ in the way they perceive certain media, similar to how the color red can mean romance or rage or something else entirely, depending on the context. But to this Postman says, "Some ways of truth-telling are better than others, and therefore have a healthier influence on the cultures that adopt them." In the book, he esteems print as the superior medium, and thus is the "healthier way of truth-telling" for a culture. This is #Day17 of my #100DaysOfInkPatterns where I make ink prints and patterns daily for 100 days. The theme for Days 11-20 is diamond tile patterns. I had to call this one "ROBIN SPARKLE". I couldn't resist. I just needed to pair "TURKEY SCUFFLE" (see prevous post) with another avian + starts-with-an-'s', rhymes-with-scuffle verb. Plus the reference to the longest watched and rewatched TV series in this household, How I Met Your Mother. And because "THE SHINING" would recall creepy thoughts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ~ JOURNAL TIME ~ ⠀⠀ I'm back to creating today. Working on the last two tiles of this series. One day's worth of not drawing, carving, or AI brought my creative spirits back in the game. Though I wouldn't pass on @hellodansol's suggestion to dance to kpop, if only my husband weren't finicky to noise while he's at work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These days I've been reading Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves To Death to build my own understanding of art and artistic expression. The book's premise is interesting: "The form in which ideas are expressed affects what those ideas will be". He wrote the book as a criticism of television as a medium of public discourse, but I believe his argument holds with any medium that is image-based, including Instagram, whose primary draw is visual storytelling. I really intended to read stuff that would help temper myself as I dive into visual art-making and IG. I'd like to reflect over this book for my next posts as long as it occupies my mind. With only 100+ pages, it's pretty substantial, and I'm really taking my time with it (still on chapter 4). If you want to read along with me, by all means! "RATATAN" - What's fun about blockprinting is how you can use the space in between prints to form shapes. In this example, I used a '+'-shaped tile that form a couple of new shapes using the negative space. "5, 6" - Pentagons and hexagons at play. Love the detail linework in this one -- so dramatic. This is #Day50 of #100DaysOfInkPatterns, the last of my #PrintingNegativeSpace series. I'll be taking a break next week, hoping to get inspiration for the next series. I feel so lost and dry. Looking to read books on blockprinting and printmaking cos I realized I have no idea what the history of this artform is. Betty Edwards said copying the works of the masters is the best way to learn technique. So maybe I'll move forward that direction with my carving exercises. "MRCHEV" - What I like about printmaking is the lack of control in how each print would look. There are so many factors in play -- ink, paper, stamp material, pressure, etc - all of which affect the texture and tone of how your design looks when printed. This appeals more to me than if say I make this design digitally -- unless I add some programmed texture effects, it wouldn't look as authentic and natural. This style gives a good balance to geometric shapes, which generally look lifeless when rendered flat. #Day42 of #100DaysOfInkPatterns.
