It’s wear your life jacket to work day -our favorite boating safety holiday!!! We’ve got our life jackets on. Do you have yours? It’s ok if you forgot to wear your life jacket to the office, but please remember it next time you go out on the water - it might save your life. ⛵️

Do you have all the required safety gear on your boat? After a long winter in storage does it still function properly? Before you head out onto the water for the first time this season make sure all your gear is tip-top! ⚓️

The first thing I do with any new boat is work out a capsize recovery plan. Little sailers are always sketchy with all the strings involved and that’s a strong reason to have as few as possible.
.
Stowed oars, a sprit rig, and a daggerboard would eliminate all the tangles but the sheet, although then we’re talking about a different boat.
.
The floats are nice and make it virtually impossible to swamp. They also make nice hiking seats.
.
Overall a minute to get back in on my first try is excellent. It gives me confidence to push the boat without worrying. I spent a bit of time out in the boat today but will wait for a few more trips to comment.

Chances are Maru is the very first Bouvier to check out a US Coast Guard 45 and help promote boating safety. This is National Safe Boating Week and we hope every boater (furry or not) has a safe and fun boating season! #safeboating #nationalsafeboatingweek #boatingtip #nationalsafeboatingcouncil #uscoastguard #bouvierdesflandres #bouviersofinstagram #bouvier #bouv #boatingsafety #dogsofinstagram #workingdogs #boatdogs #boatingwithdogs @mti_life_jackets @boatingcampaign @boatusfoundation @boatus @myvestfriends @mti_life_jackets #mtilifejackets
The only way to know if your self rescue is actually going to work in real life conditions is to practice a LOT. Through endless repetition in all kinds of conditions you figure out what works and what doesn’t and solve all the little problems BEFORE you discover them in real life emergency. My latest rescue takes advantage of two 4 inch diameter solid pool noodles lashed to the inside of the frame. Not only does this give me enough flotation to make the boat essentially self dumping but it gives me the perfect hand hold to jump back in the canoe. The only downside is that it works so well that there’s a real risk of losing the boat to the wind before I can grab it. To deal with this I’ve added to short tether to my dry duffel and the minute I capsize I thread my arm through the strap leaving both hands free to complete the rescue. It’s taken about five months of experimentation, but I’m down to about 30 seconds from capsize to being back in the boat paddling which makes this lifelong kayaker feel a little bit less queasy about going canoeing!

Spring may have sprung, but that doesn't mean you should let your guard down... especially on Lake Powell. After such a dry season last year and a wet winter, the lake level is going to change a lot every day: keep alert!
The lake is still going down just a little bit everyday and most of the underwater hazards that are coming out haven't been seen since 2005.
The lake is also getting a lot more narrow as the level declines so boaters should use caution and be very watchful of unexpected underwater hazards as well as other boaters and kayaks.
We only mark the main channel with navigational and hazard buoys so if people go into side canyons be sure to go slow, watch for other boaters, kayaks, and rocks, remember to stay 150' away from other boats when going faster than wakeless speed.
