Turn on the Heat by Erle Stanley Gardner was first published in 1940 as the first in the Lam and Cool series since the publisher did not print The Knife Slipped(which was written before Turn on the Heat) because of censorship issues.
Gardner writing as A. A. Fair was one of the most prolific crime fiction writers of the 1900s. Turn on the Heat is about two detectives who are hired by a mysterious Mr. Smith to locate a woman who has been lost for 21 years. Initially a case that seems cold gives rise to a warm trail filled with evidences, bad cops and murders as Donald Lam begins snooping around.
The book has unexpected twists at every turn and the ending was absolutely unpredictable. Politics played a huge role in the plot and the author intelligently showcases the the extent of "mudslinging" between the two parties which form the basis of the book. I personally loved how the author painted the characters of Cool and Lam. While the former is a greedy, self centred woman with flashing diamonds on her hands, the latter is a sickly, weak but brilliant detective who is also a womaniser and it is he that drives the plot of the book forward. The focus of the book is on Lam although we are hardly given any information regarding his personal life. The other characters in the book are rather single dimensional and most importantly, the biggest question remains unanswered- Why would "Mr. Smith" hire detectives to locate "Mrs Lintig" in the first place?

Currently reading AYESHA AT LAST between study breaks ♥️This is a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, so you might want to add it to your tbr if you love retellings. There’s actually another P&P retelling on my tbr (Unmarriageable); I haven’t read Austen’s novel though Have you read any ‘Muslim romance’ novels? Here’s the synopsis of AYESHA AT LAST:
Ayesha Shamsi has a lot going on. Her dreams of being a poet have been set aside for a teaching job so she can pay off her debts to her wealthy uncle. She lives with her boisterous Muslim family and is always being reminded that her flighty younger cousin, Hafsa, is close to rejecting her one hundredth marriage proposal. Though Ayesha is lonely, she doesn't want an arranged marriage. Then she meets Khalid who is just as smart and handsome as he is conservative and judgmental. She is irritatingly attracted to someone who looks down on her choices and dresses like he belongs in the seventh century.
Ayesha is torn between how she feels about the straightforward Khalid and the unsettling new gossip she hears about his family. Looking into the rumors, she finds she has to deal with not only what she discovers about Khalid, but also the truth she realizes about herself.

Happy Friday!
Don't you just love it when a trilogy looks as good together as the Caraval trilogy does?
I can't stand it when cover themes change midway through a series

•
if you were to have a fictional character as your mentor, whom would you choose?
•
i would choose Kaz Brekker so he can teach me every scheme, strategy or tactic that was ever known in the devil's history. pls Kaz, make me your villain.
•
lol jk (not really) i would probably choose Azriel or Isabelle Lightwood or Katniss Everdeen so they could teach me some useful combat skills ⚔
