Founded in the late 17th century, Château Pichon Baron is one of the most renown Second Grand Cru Classé of Pauillac appellation. The 2018 vintage I had the honor to taste in preview during En Primeur shows power and grace at the same time, great aging potential and finesse. But I have to say I was impressed by their dry white wines production in Sauternes: I think that white dry wines of Bordeaux are much underrated, I truly recommend to my fellow wine lovers to check these out. Blanc sec de Suduiraut is a remarkable example of complexity and freshness, expression of the primary aromas of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, grown on the sandy gravel soil of a Premier Cru Classé vineyard in Sauternes. I have become enamored with #Bordeaux. Seeing #EnPrimeur first hand is something that I will never forget and something I hope to experience again in my future. As winners of the Millesima Blog Awards, my fellow bloggers and I, were able to taste the 2017 vintage before release. Our sponsor was Chateau Clerc Milon, a Grand Cru Classe located in #Pauillac. We spent our final night in Bordeaux in April, at the Chateau learning about their wines and their history. . When I had to opportunity to purchase futures of @chateauclercmilon last year, I knew I had to jump on the opportunity. Pauillac is perhaps the most famous of the main Bordeaux regions, since it is the home of 3 of the 5 First Growth wineries. I am not sure I can wait to taste these bottles...but patience is a virtue and I will spend many a night dreaming of this #wine. . The 2016 Pauillac wines proved to be intense and powerful. The season saw late flowering, but the conditions were good. There was plenty of rain during the early months, but the gravel and clay provided ample drainage leading up to a dry, warm summer. The heat of the summer months placed the vines in stress until more rain returned in mid September. . The wine is a blend of 55% #CabernetSauvignon, 29% #Merlot, 13% #CabernetFranc, 2% #PetitVerdot and 1% old vine #Carmenere. 13.6% ABV. A lovely wine for under $30 * Score : 91 Point * Drink : Now ~ 2032+ * Comment : Top value * Surface : 16ha on ownership * Grapes : Merlot 100% from Castillon * Average vine age : 35 year old * Winery information At the eastern side of the commune of Sainte-Colombe, just off the road that runs north from Castillon-La-Bataille up to the Cotes de Francs, you will find Castillon's best estate. Jean Marie Carrille bought it in 1967 and his son Philippe took over in 1993. There were 10 hectares originally, but the vineyard has been extended since. The vines are closer togerther than is normal in these parts, hand-harvested and the wine aged in wood, using one-third new. Philippe Carrille has tried microbullage, malo in barrel and batonnage, but has reverted to more traditional methods, considering that the results are more elegant. The best wine in called simply Poupille. It is a wine of real flair, quality and finesse: rich and succulent, intense and harmonious. Every time I drink a 1999 vintage, I get that Prince song ringing in my head - #gonnapartylikeits1999. Am I the only one? An aged Léoville Barton is certainly very worthy of such celebration. Nothing like a fully mature Bordeaux.
