10 years ago I went on a trip that changed me forever.
A little about me. I was born in Gujarat. I was adopted and moved to the US when I was 5. I was raised by a single mom who was interested about other cultures, especially India, which is why she adopted me. I went to a Hindu temple growing up and read about India. I always wanted to return to India one day. My mom was a professor and found out that she could take students to India on a trip. It would be a 2 week trip to multiple places in northern India. I found out that I could go!
It was the first time I would be returning to India in 13 years. It was great to go back to the country I left behind. I loved being in a place where I was around other people that looked like me.
Even though I wasn’t able to visit Gujarat, I still got to see India. We went to New Delhi, Rajasthan, and Agra. I loved that I was able to make this trip with my mom because she’s never been and always wanted to go. It was also the last trip we went on together because she passed away from cancer 3 years after the trip.
It was an emotional trip for me. I remember sitting on the balcony having breakfast and looking out to see the busy street below. Even though I was grateful for the life I had and being adopted by a great woman I couldn’t help but feel jealous of the kids who grew up in India with an Indian family.
After the trip I made it a goal to return to India as soon as I could. I was grateful to be able to study abroad there for 6 months, 3 years later. I was also able to scatter my mom’s ashes in the Ganges River.
I haven’t been back to India in 8 years but I’m planning to return to visit the orphanage I lived in for 5 years. #fbf #birthcountry #india #adopted #borninindia #personaltravel
