Gaji (*not her real name) has lost both her husband and her son to Boko Haram... almost everyone in the IDP camps in north east Nigeria had lost literally everything fleeing the insurgency. Many of them will not be returning home for a long time, if ever. Although Gaji’s face carries her sorrow, her story isn’t without hope; a small business grant from Street Child means she could start selling petty goods from the converted boarding school her and thousands more call home, giving back some of her independence again. Thanks to UNHAS, Street Child of Nigeria and Street Child’s local partners for acting as translators and assistants to help create this image, and to Gaji for sharing her time and her story with us. Housing for internally displaced people in Dikwa, Nigeria, on assignment for @streetchilduk. What hasn’t really communicated about the nine year insurgency is the sheer volume of the displacement. You get some idea of it Maiduguri but it’s when you see towns like Dikwa from the air and see the lines kilometres long of women waiting for the daily ration of food the sheer scale of people displaced becomes apparent. What a wonderful way to celebrate International Women's Day by being able to share this portrait I made on assignment for @streetchilduk in Borno State, Nigeria. The nine-year Boko Haram insurgency is best-known for the kidnapping and return of the Chibhok schoolgirls, but what is far less well-publicised is the massive displacement of Nigerians by this conflict; a staggering 2.3 million people now call IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps their home, having lost, in the most literal sense, everything. Falmatta (not her real name for security reasons), is one of the thousands now living in the town of Dikwa, occupied by Boko Haram for three years. The town is in ruins, so homes are a mix of thatch and white tarpaulin tents, and food from daily rations issued by @worldfoodprogramme . For me, her stature and composure reflected both the hardship these people have endured, but also the dignity and poise with which they face it. I'm delighted that her story can be shared as part of @natgeoyourshot ’s"Best of the Week".
