For today's mobility Monday here's a little clip from this past Thursday evenings Kinstretch class.
I am guiding everyone through level II 90/90 shoulder axial rotations in the Bear sit base position. Cueing my clients to pop their tennis balls increases their tension (irradiation). Once we hit end range in Shoulder Internal Rotation (IR) and External Rotation (ER) we progressed to elbow hinges, and then axials with the arms straight to finished off a nice shoulder complex. “Be brilliant at the basics” is at the core of my ethos in coaching or learning anything. This is exactly what I mean by the “basics” as it relates to movement & fitness. The aerobic system is the foundation of fitness and training it does not make you slow (for some reason this is common thought). Not having it, by definition, literally means you’re not in shape. Mobility & joint health is the foundation of movement and not having it means less movement options, less movement potential and thus less athletic potential. Anyone great at anything is Brilliant at the Basics. It is the difference between a white belt and a black belt. #functionalrangesystems

I've been reviewing some of my notes from the Functional Range Systems Summit that took place back in June and came across this gem. This video from @deweynielsen represented what we are trying to accomplish with my business to a T. Strength training is an amazing thing, but we must first control our internal environment (your self and your joints) before adding external load. Trying to explain to people the importance of this concept is truly a struggle, but its one worth fighting for. Do yourself a favor, make your joints into rock stars and then start adding external load. Trust me it will be worth the time and effort. #bestrongbemobile
Long term consistency beats short term intensity

Anyone who has ever mastered their craft has become brilliant at the basics and to become brilliant at the basics, one has to consistently practice them long term.
•
✨Doing an exercise once will not make you strong.
✨Doing an exercise once will not mean you’ve mastered the movement (nor will it ever because movement is different every time we do it)
✨Taking one class does not mean you’ve now mastered the content.
✨Taking one Bjj class does not mean you understand the technique fully now.
•
You get my point. Let’s become dedicated to mastering the basics, practicing them over and over again, trying and failing, learning and improving. Practice it until you think you can’t get it wrong, and then practice it some more. Become obsessed with the love of learning and growth.

Obsessed is a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated, or in this case, a word I’ll use to describe myself. Get rid of the negative connotation people have with this word, because if you’re not obsessing over something, then maybe you’re just on cruise control

The more controllable ranges of motion you have, the more movement opportunities you possess. For example, if you don't have enough active Shoulder ranges to spend a few hours swimming (#surfing #swimming) or lifting weights (#olympiclifting #crossfit #lifetasks), ⚠️⚠️⚠️then you don't get that range option and have to move another way and because your brain doesn’t know how to control ranges that you can’t ACTIVELY achieve and injuries can occur
And because you don’t have those USABLE ranges often means more energy spent and more time taken to accomplish the same task.
Better control of greater ranges will make your movements (swimming or lifting weights) more efficient and give you more options.
