another week, another wavy line
this piece is a commission for a client in the US- swipe through to see a time lapse of me weaving it!
i almost never work from cartoons for a weaving like this. instead i have a very rough scale drawing, and to make shapes i use cardboard cut outs that i draw around and check against as i weave. i find it easier to get precise forms this way, but more importantly i just love playing around with cut outs! i build my designs almost like collages, arranging and re-arranging the different shapes laid out on the loom, until i find the combination that’s just right.
1 hour of weaving in 1 minute - watch to the end to see my “oh i actually like this” face I really prefer these simple frames for small-scale weaving. Even though they take a bit longer to warp, you have a lot more control over warp spacing which is actually pretty crucial! I’m weaving at 5 warps per inch here, which is fine for a quick practice. But if I wanted a cleaner, more precise shape, I would probably warp up my loom at 6 or 8 warps per inch.
If you’d like to learn how to weave like this for yourself- my next tapestry weaving workshop will be held on September 14th right here in my East London studio. It covers both simple and advanced techniques and you get own loom, wool and weaving tools to take home. Find out more via the link in my bio!
looking forward to hosting this weekend’s rug weaving workshop in my freshly painted studio ✨
when i chose to double the amount of studio space i rented i was definitely not prepared for all the challenges it would bring. mostly because i now have twice the amount of space to try and keep tidy but after 4 months i can honestly say it was the right decision. this is my favourite place to be.
p.s. there’s only a handful of spots left on my final two workshops of this year! next round of rug weaving workshops won’t start until February 2020. link is in my bio to book your space!
one happy weaver in a freshly painted studio with a big old tapestry on the wall ✨
the space still needs a few more finishing touches (spot the the masking tape ) but i’m so excited to be hosting workshops here soon! both of my August workshops are sold out but there are still a few spaces on my rug weaving and tapestry weaving classes in September. more info at the link in my bio

this wavy line has appeared repeatedly in my work in the last two years. it symbolises a number of things- unravelling threads, winding pathways, twisting rivers, the flow of the weft through the warp.
the symbols i use in my weaving are touchstones that i keep coming back to, ideas i pick up and put down, rethinking them in different ways.
fundamentally, my journey as a weaver has always been about how to strip things down to their essence- how to say more with less.

yesterday’s workshop was so much fun and i just can’t believe i get to do this for a living. these guys were a great class- thanks for letting me geek out about weaving at you for two straight days if you’d like to try rug weaving for yourself, there’s still two spots left for September’s workshop! link is in my bio.
meanwhile this week i’m going to be: weaving, writing, and finallyyy painting the underside of my mezzanine! get ready for those photos straight outta Pinterest kids
A question for the makers: what do you feel your craft has taught you about life?
if there’s one thing weaving has taught me it’s that by working slowly, little by little, you can achieve so much more than you’d ever expect. I’m trying to apply that to my business as a whole right now, and not expect everything to happen today, or this week, or even this month- but to focus on one thing at a time, moving forward bit by bit, knowing that I will get there in the end.
If you’ve learnt something similar from your craft, or something completely different- I’d love to know
