If you are a Bengali, let me sincerely apologize to you for this plate of food. Because in this plate there is Quinoa instead of Bhaat (Rice) and the quintessential Aloo Bhaate (Bengali style Mashed Potatoes) is made with @australiansweetpotatoes instead of the regular ones that we love so much.
Let me reassure you that this is NOT my take on Bengali Cuisine, NOR am I trying to reinvent anything. The nontraditional things on this plate happened because I was desperate, and when a girl wants Bengali food, she does whatever she has to.
So, I was speaking with my mom on the phone today, and she mentioned how her best friend, Anu aunty or Maashi Maa as my brother and I called her, had paid her a visit and had got a lot of food with her. Now my mom and I both love this cuisine, and we started reminiscing about things and by the time I had kept the phone down I had a major craving for something cooked in Mustard oil and tempered with Panch Phoron (Bengali 5 spice) or Nigella seeds uff !!!! An Eggplant hiding somewhere in the fridge was rescued and slathered in the usual spices and fried in Mustard oil, till it was all fleshy and gooey and ready to fall apart. Masoor Dal (Pink lentils) was pressure cooked with Green chilies and Turmeric and then tempered with Panch Phoron. The Tomato & Date chutney that I had made a few days ago also came to the rescue. Since I always have Sweet Potatoes at home, I decided to be bold and boiled them and then slathered them in more Mustard oil with green chilies, coriander and chopped Onion. By the time all this cooking was done, I had no energy or patience left to boil Rice. So, I did what no Bengali would ever do, I just heated some leftover Quinoa and polished off the meal using my fingers.
Let me admit the Dal did not taste as good as it does when eaten with Bhaat (Rice) and the Aloo Bhaate while still delicious, did not possess the charm of waxy white Potatoes. But, on a cold winters night here in Sydney, in a Punjabi/Marathi home there was still this illusion of eating a favorite Bengali meal from my childhood, and I guess sometimes that is enough.
Not sure if anyone else agrees?
