For those that think vaping is without risks, let me present my patient. Michael had not had a cavity in 35 years. In the past year he started vaping and developed 8 cavities His vape solution did not contain nicotine at all...it was 80% vegetable glycerin (which gives it a sweet taste ) and 20% polypropylene glycol. VG has been shown to lower microhardness of teeth in an ex vivo study and PG has been shown to lower salivary flow (saliva protects teeth against cavities). So there you have it! Nothing is without risks, and if you vape, please use a high fluoride toothpaste and see a dental professional.
I’m shook, as the kids say. This patient has not had a professional dental cleaning in 30 years and refused, absolutely refused, a pro bono cleaning that I offered her today. While some people are mortified by such neglect, I can’t help but consider the kind of dental trauma this woman must have experienced in her youth. Not only that, but the sensory overload that some patients experience from dental visits. I certainly listened and educated (even showed her this pic), but ultimately it was not enough.
Sometimes when impacted canines are meeting each other at the palatal midline things can get a little messy. Exposure for this patient was obviously traumatic and the tissue had a hard time healing- becoming denuded and sloughing off immediately after exposure. I'm not sure if the oral surgeon could have avoided the complication- sometimes things just don't always go exactly to plan. We laid off it for a while before starting to separate the two. The tissue wound up healing well within 3 weeks. Phew- thank God our patient was a champ and she never ever complained #ourpatientsrock #toughtoothtuesday #rockoutwithyourcaninesout
Flash that new smile this Friday! This patient was missing an upper premolar forever and didn’t want an implant or bridge to replace it. No problem! We closed that space right up for her without sacrificing her midline or lip support. Someone’s got a new accessory this weekend! #fridayvibes #flashy #makeover
