This 1966 Buick Riviera Gran Sport - MZ Code Super Wildcat was one of our most popular listings last week on Hemmings.com.⠀ ⠀ From the seller:⠀ "This is a genuine factory GS Super Wildcat (dual quad carburetor) optioned car of which only 179 were made and identified by the MZ engine code. This is the same engine package that came standard from factory on the 1965 Riviera GS but it was not standard on the 66 Riviera GS. Starting late February in the 66 model year, Buick announced the Super Wildcat option would be available on GS optioned Riviera's and 179 were so equipped before the end of model year.⠀ ⠀ I completed an authentic frame-off restoration in 2016 using 40 years of experience with 66-67 Riviera's driving and restoring. This project was the pinnacle of my Riviera hobby career. Large emphasis was on actual restoration of original parts vs replacing with reproduction/aftermarket which can reduce integrity and desirability of a restoration. Though it was built to run as good as it looks, this Riviera is too rare and exceptional for me to drive and enjoy without causing mental stress. American convertibles had been all but dead for six years when, at the Chicago Auto Show in February, 1982, #Buick debuted a brand new droptop Riviera. From 1977-1982 coachbuilders had supplied droptops, a few of which were sold semi-officially by dealers. Examples of this breed included Cadillac’s Le Cabriolet and AMC’s Sundancer; but production was tiny and manufacturers offered only modest help in marketing them. The new Riviera didn’t differ that much from these philosophically, but GM made it an “official” model, marking the return of “factory” U.S. convertibles. - In truth, the car was designed and built by #AmericanSunroofCorporation (ASC). There’s some debate over who approached who, but ASC’s Mark Trostle Sr. (father of @trostlemark) once described the ASC crew as fabricating a one-off Riv in 1981 and showing it off to an enthusiastic audience at GM. This meeting led to the production deal. Hess & Eisenhardt had already done 1979-81 Eldorados, as they’d done with the Le Cabriolet, but each cost ~$40K. ASC’s idea was much more cost-effective. ASC Rivs would retail for about $24K - ~$9K more than the top Riviera T-type. - The process of making the cars involved shipping an assembled Riviera from GM’s Linden, NJ, factory to ASC in Michigan, where the tops were cut off, the body strengthened, the power top and a modified interior installed, then leak tested. To simplify things, the Riviera droptop was available in only two colors - White or Firemist Red with Claret or Maple interiors and white or red tops. Ahead of the A-pillar they were standard Rivs, powered by a Buick 4.1L V6, an Olds 5.0L V8, or in rare cases (’84-’85 only, 96 made) Buick’s 190-hp Turbo 3.8. - Production was limited to 1,248 cars for 1982, and many were snapped up quickly - so GM built 1,750 for 1983; but these languished. In April of 1982 Chrysler introduced its LeBaron, and that fall the Mustang convertible had returned - at much lower prices. With units still unsold, GM reduced production to 500 cars for 1984 and also began selling the related Eldorado convertible. Both were retired after the Riv and Eldo were downsized for 1986. 3,898 Riviera convertibles were made; 1,456 in Red.
