Hashimoto’s Health Tip: Antibiotic Therapy Has Consequences Hey people! This week I wanted to explore the ecosystem of the gut. I am of the opinion that autoimmunity (which as you know, Hashimoto’s is one example of) is born and progresses in the gut. And sometimes, I’ve observed that some practitioners and doctors have a tendency to think they can eradicate themselves to good gut health. You know, they prescribe antibiotics for even the slightest sinus or or respiratory infection (most of which are viral, by the way). And some alternative practitioners are gung ho about prescribing antibiotics for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) or they are interested in aggressively attacking Candida with strong herbal formulas. Well, one thing that research has shown is that this can back fire and lead to all kinds of problems. For example, I was just reading a study that looked at the impact of antibiotic therapy on the microbiome. http://mbio.asm.org/content/6/6/e01693-15.full.pdf In this study, they assessed the impact of antibiotics on the human microbial ecology at two niches. They followed the oral and gut microbiomes in 66 individuals from before, immediately after, and up to 12 months after exposure to different antibiotic classes. Here’s what they found: “The salivary microbiome recovered quickly and was surprisingly robust toward antibiotic-induced disturbance.” In other words the bacteria in saliva is really resilient and can bounce back quickly. (Good news for all you fans of teeth!) “The fecal microbiome”…on the other hand…”was severely affected by most antibiotics: for months, health-associated butyrate-producing species became strongly underrepresented.” Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid that helps maintain healthy barrier in the gut, it helps promote regulatory T cells in the colon (super important for dampening the immune response), and it helps to prevent leaky gut. Low levels of butyrate have been found in numerous autoimmune diseases including type-1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease and Inflammatory bowel disease.
