Gnarly right?! I didn’t know anything about this issue until @alex___weber of the @theplasticpick_up asked if I wanted to build an art installation from 50,000 marine debris golf balls... how could I say No?! . I’ve come to learn that as many as 2-5 million golf balls have been hit into the waters I love to surf and fish over the last 90 years. . Alex took it upon herself to do something about this issue as a 16 year old, and her advocacy and research have officially made the world a better place! The Pebble Beach Company is now making a concerted effort to reclaim their golf balls through 200 underwater clean ups per year over the next 5 years with @noaadebris and @noaasanctuaries . We’re excited to share this positive message highlighting the power of one dedicated teenager to change her local community, and the ripple effects that can have once large corporations begin to be accountable for their externalities! This is exactly the type of project I started @countercurrent_art for! . I’m kicking off Earth Day with a GoFundMe campaign (link in Bio) for my nonprofit @countercurrent_art ’s newest public art project “Fore the Waves”: a 26ft x 8ft x 8ft interactive/portable wave sculpture made from over 20,000 golf balls collected from the seafloor off Pebble Beach, CA by the @theplasticpick_up . Then-high school student @alex___weber led the collection effort and published a scientific study with researchers from @hopkinsmarinestation @stanford demonstrating that they break up in the surf zone, releasing their microplastic cores that can contain seriously toxic additives such as zinc acrylate. . As a result of this teen-led cleanup effort, @noaasanctuaries and Pebble Beach Golf Course have designed a formal protocol involving over 200 underwater cleanups for the next 5 years to continue to collect the 2-5 million more balls that are thought to be offshore of the Pebble Beach coastline. Our goal with this mobile art installation is to expand the adoption of this cleanup protocol to coastal golf courses globally, while highlighting the power of individuals (young and old) to make a positive impact on their local ecosystem. . The sculpture will be built on a 26ft flatbed trailer so we’ll be able to activate it at different events around the country including our first stop at @theohanafest in September! Had an amazing morning cleaning the beach with some beautiful like minded people. It’s great to see so many artists, festivals and venues making a change and going plastic free. Thank you @jackjohnson for being the soundtrack to my childhood and inspiring me to play music. As well as teaching me to tread lightly on this land. The first song I sang live was Taylor at our school talent night so to hang and have a chat was an honour. We started touring three and a half years ago and it has been such a fun and rewarding experience for us. But we quickly realized that musicians and venues have a serious plastic water bottle problem.
