Cacao has a dimorphic growth habit where a single upright stem (orthotropic) splits into 3-5 lateral branches (plagiotropic) called a jorquette. Sometimes these jorquettes are too high, and there’s no practical way to make it form lower. Also when young trees bear too much fruit or get wrecked by a storm, one or more of the laterals shears off the jorquette (pic 5) leaving an unsightly scar and opening for disease or insect attack. Fortunately, cacao is easy to graft, and the inverted-U bark graft is perfect method to correct these problems. I’ve just grafted a lateral branch below the split and where I’d ideally like to have branching start. Step by step procedures in this series. The hardest part is making a nice whip cut on the scion, but just practice on branches left over from pruning until you get the muscle memory.
