⠀ Is a calorie, a calorie? ⠀ Both of the above diets provide 1950 calories, however it isn’t hard to see that whilst the calories might be the same, not all calories provide the same nutritionally. Don’t get me wrong, calorie awareness is definitely important when it comes to losing, gaining and maintaining weight, but it should not be the only factor that we focus on. What really matters is WHERE those calories come from rather than relying on counting calories alone. ⠀ The reason the WHERE matters is because the human body is complex, and the regulation of energy balance is no different, it is also a complex process! Foods go through different metabolic pathways and therefore the way different food are metabolised does shake up the whole “calories in vs calories out” statement. ⠀ Whilst the above diets provide the same calories, it is not hard to see that there is a significant difference between both options. The quality and quantity of foods provided are different. The diet on the right provides foods from all of the 5 foods groups; fruit, vegetables, protein, dairy, healthy fats and wholegrains. It is nutrient dense and even provides some chocolate, because ‘balance’. ⠀ Even though both sides provide the same calories, the diet on the right provides foods that promote satiety e.g. fibre rich veggies, fruits and whole grains, protein and healthy fats. Whereas the diet on the left provides fast digesting carbs, free sugar and less protein and fibre. ⠀ Creating this post in itself was a time consuming process. Weighing, measuring and counting what you are eating is a time consuming process and is one that is simply not practical or realistic as a long term lifestyle choice, and wouldn't be great for your mental health either! A far more achievable method is to focus on the type and amount of the food you are consuming, along with calorie awareness rather than solely relying on calorie counting. ⠀ Calorie awareness is a great tool for packaged foods, especially now that food manufacturers are doing just about anything to create the 'health halo' effect so that their product is perceived as being a ‘better’ alternative to the original. Think healthy chips!

⠀ Are you guilty of only considering certain foods as being ‘processed’? ⠀ ‘Processed’ is a word that has been used very loosely when describing certain foods. What most people often don’t realise is that processed foods fall on a spectrum, from minimally to heavily/ultra-processed. ⠀ Technically a processed food is any food that has been altered in some way during preparation. Most foods we eat are actually processed in some way! ⠀ Food processing involves several methods such as freezing, canning, cooking, packaging, even something as simple as chopping or slicing are considered to be methods of processing. ⠀ Processing foods can be beneficial! Food processing allows food manufacturers to improve the nutritional quality of certain food product through fortification e.g. calcium fortified almond milk! ⠀ Food processing also makes for convenience options e.g. microwave rice cups, canned legumes and beans and salad mixes. Something most people benefit from with our busy day to day lives. ⠀ Food processing also assists with ensuring food safety (pasteurisation), preserving the nutritional quality of certain food products, and can also decrease the price of some products e.g frozen fruit and veg. ⠀ The only processed foods we need to limit are those that are ‘ultra processed’. You can identify these by looking at the ingredients list of the product.
