Merry Christmas Eve! I don’t have a holiday post planned per se... but candles are sort of festive? The other week when I asked for post ideas, someone suggested candle care tips! I admittedly used to be very lazy with candle care, but was low key peer pressured by people on IG so I picked up the slack ____ Here are my tips for clean, evenly burning candles-- whether they cost $1 or $100! Always trim your wick down to 1/8 - 1/4 inch before burning-- you can use a wick cutter or scissors work too (I've even used nail clippers in a pinch.) Follow instructions and don’t burn the candle for too long! Most candles will have a suggested burn time— ie don’t burn for more than 2-3 hours at a time. If you burn them too long, the candle can overheat and warp the label. It can also cause excess soot. Wait for the candle to pool evenly before extinguishing the flame. If you can’t get an even pool, you can wrap the lit candle in aluminum foil and pinch the top so there’s a small opening. This should help even it out and prevent tunneling. If you have a lot of black, soot marks on your candle you can use a cotton pad wet with rubbing alcohol to wipe away the soot. BUT be careful if your candle is painted because then the alcohol can strip away the paint. You can either attempt to gently dab off the soot or just leave it. For instance the outside of overose candles are painted, so I just leave it. But the inside isn’t painted so I’ve cleaned the soot there. Aaand it goes without saying, don’t leave a lit candle unattended!
