One large study showed that adults who ate at least one fresh or dried hot red chili pepper a month for almost 20 years lowered their chances of death by 13%. Researchers aren’t sure why, but they think some credit may be due to the peppers’ nutrients and their power to fight inflammation and obesity. ️ #capsaicin #hotpeppers #metabolism #nutrition #wellness #peppers

#Resiniferatoxin (#RTX) is a naturally occurring #chemical found in resin #spurge (Euphorbia resinifera), a #cactus-like plant commonly found in Morocco, and in #Euphorbia poissonii found in northern Nigeria. It is a potent functional analog of #capsaicin, the active ingredient in chili peppers. It’s also a pretty crazy structure! Check the oxygens! Further reading: Christopher S. J. Walpole; et al. #Gingerol, properly as [6]-gingerol, is a #chemical compound found in fresh #ginger. Chemically, gingerol is a relative of #capsaicin and #piperine, the compounds which give chilli peppers and black pepper their respective spiciness. It is normally found as a pungent yellow oil, but also can form a low-melting crystalline solid. It is responsible for the main aroma in gingersnap cookies and gingerbread houses :) #chemistree #chemistry #christmas #holidays #science #molecule #moleculeoftheday

Capsaicin is a natural product found in chili peppers that is responsible for the spiciness of spicy foods. On the Scoville scale used to rate the pungency of chili peppers, pure capsaicin has a rating over 15,000,000. Aside from its culinary importance capsaicin is also used for topical analgesics, treatment of peripheral neuropathy, pest deterrents, and personal defense pepper spray. Capsaicin binds to receptor called TRPV1 which normally responds to heat and abrasive damage, thus providing the same sensations without any physical burn. Pure capsaicin is not red, but is a crystalline white powder that is extremely irritating and toxic to all mammals. Most people are familiar with mild overdose symptoms such as tearing, sweating, vomiting, intense pain, and burning diarrhea. Very high levels of capsaicin can even cause cyanosis and DNA damage; the LD50 has been measured around 50 mg/kg in mice. #forbiddensnacks #chemistry #organicchemistry #inorganicchemistry #chemistrylab #chemistry_lab #chemistrylife #chemistrylifestyle #chemistryfun #chemistryisfun #chemistrylove #chemistrylovers #chemistrydaily #chemistrynotes #chemistryeducation #quimica #chemie #science #chemical #chemicals #molecule #molecules #moleculeoftheday #spice #spicy #chili #pepper #capsaicin #scoville #scovillescale

#Capsaicin, an active ingredient of pungent substances such as #chilipeppers, inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells. This was reported by a team headed by the Bochum-based scent researcher Prof Dr Dr Dr habil Hanns Hatt and Dr Lea Weber. In the cultivated cells, the team detected a number of typical olfactory receptors. One receptor occurred very frequently; it is usually found in the fifth cranial nerve, i.e. the trigeminal nerve. It belongs to the so-called Transient Receptor Potential Channels and is named TRPV1. That receptor is activated by the spicy molecule capsaicin as well as by helional -- a scent of fresh sea breeze. In collaboration with Dr Gabriele Bonatz from the Augusta clinics in Bochum (Brustzentrum), Hatt's team confirmed the existence of TRPV1 in tumour cells in nine different samples from patients suffering from breast cancer. The researchers activated the TRPV1 receptor in the cell culture with capsaicin or helional, by adding the substances to the culture for a period of several hours or days. As a result, the cancer cells divided more slowly. Moreover, the treatment caused tumour cells to die in larger numbers. The surviving cells were no longer able to move as quickly as heretofore; this implies that their ability to form metastases in the body was impeded. The experiments were carried out with the SUM149PT cell culture, a model system for a particularly aggressive type of breast cancer, i.e. the triple-negative type. Chemotherapy is currently the only available treatment for this type of cancer. Source: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/12/161220094449.htm . . .
