Today’s Lesson : intelligent disobedience and retrievals. Piper has only recently figured out the art of her breed, retrieving. So we have been perfecting this over the last couple weeks. Mostly picking her head all the way up when presenting the item. The other part of this is the tricky part. Intelligent Disobedience. Normally, the dog isn’t allowed on my white dining room set, for obvious reasons. And after about 15 perfect retrievals from various other places in my house, this was the one that took several tries and even some coaxing to get her to understand that it was okay to get up there as long as it was part of the task. So what you’re not seeing here is the 4 other attempts where she wouldn’t even touch her foot to the material. Where I had I guide her to the bottle. What else you don’t see is her attempt about 15 min later to get back up there to retrieve the bottle again without command and my correcting her. She immediately complied. That tells me Piper knows it’s a command-only- privilege. So what are you seeing? A confident service dog performing a task that involves being a little naughty, but could save my behind if I ever become too dizzy to get back up and need to take a medication or rehydrate. Tonight’s adventure was something of a reunion for me. We rejoined the service dog class that I used to teach when I was back in MO, just for old time’s sake. What I didn’t expect, was to have almost every dog I have worked with there tonight (we were missing 2). Some of whom I have not seen in nearly a year. I share such a special bond with each of these dogs, welcoming them into my home for a time, bringing them into my lifestyle, perfecting their training in public. I can’t begin to describe the feeling as each dog entered the store and recognized me one by one. The wagging tails and big smiles were all the reward I would ever need. But I received even more- I got see these 4 dogs paired with their veterans and changing their lives. Yesterday we were at the hospital for 15 hours for my grandpa’s surgery and my girl said that I was the best boy ever! I didn’t have a ton of breaks and mostly just layed down all day, but I’m a pro and helped cheer up all the humans!
