I bought this bread tray to sell in my cabin-themed Etsy shop, AbleMabelsCampfire, but I’m having a hard time letting go. . It has a lot of the appeal of the carved wood bread boards that so many of us love—but it isn’t actually wood. It’s a molded composite material with a convincing wood grain texture and well-cast details. Somebody, somewhere, would have carved the original and then a mold was made to cast countless replicas. The design suggests that this could even be a late nineteenth century piece; while we think of this kind of copying as a later phenomenon, design literature of the 1860s describes (and denounces ) the production of cast ornament meant to look like wood. . All of this intrigues me. I’m just as enthusiastic about process and craftsmanship as I am about aesthetics, so this little bread tray appeals to me for more than just its charming bunches of pine cones and branches—although I really, really like those too. Whoever made the original was an expert carver—maybe they even specialized in carving for casting. . What kinds of things speak to you about who made them and how? What creative and design processes fascinate you? I remember how intrigued I was to learn about millefiori glassmaking and marquetry inlay. Elegant and simple systems that produce complex results.
