Christ Church Cathedral is a breath-taking mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and has been the seat of the spiritual head of the Church of England for nearly five centuries. ⠀ ⠀ Nothing now remains above ground of the church that Augustine built or the Anglo-Saxon cathedral that followed it. Sacked by the Danes in 1011, the ancient Cathedral was finally ravaged beyond repair by the disastrous fire that swept across the city in 1067. ⠀ ⠀ The current Cathedral was built by the first Norman archbishop, Lanfranc, on its current grand Romanesque (what does this mean) scale. Not everyone knows, but originally I am from Bulgaria. Born and raised in the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia. I live since 10 years in Switzerland and feel both as home country. Both so different, but so deep in my heart.♥️ On this picture is the beautiful Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is one of the main attractions in Sofia and the most important Orthodox church in Bulgaria, the seat of the country’s patriarch. ↠ When the foundations of the cathedral were laid, a metal boxed with the names of the members of the government was buried next to them. ↠ The cathedral has 12 bells, all created in Moscow and brought to Sofia from there.
