Happy Feast Day
Saint Afra
Died: 304
Feast Day: August 5
Patronage: Germany, martyrs, penitent women, medicinal herbs.
#SaintAfra originally from Cyprus, settled in Germany. She is reputed to have run a brothel in that town. During the Diocletian persecutions, a fleeing bishop hid there, converting #StAfra, her employees, and her family. When she refused to renounce the bishop or her faith to the authorities, she was burned to death. Her mother and three of her servants suffered the same fate.

Reminiscing about the pilgrimage we took to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine in Lacrosse, Wisconsin last summer. My one big take-away from our trip is that Mary came to the people of Mexico when they were in desperate need of someone to comfort and strengthen them, in other words, when they needed a mother.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yesterday was a rough day for me and a phone call to my (earthly) mom was exactly what I needed. It is apparent that Mary is just as ready to listen. Mary is our heavenly mother, "for from her is born our holiness, our wisdom, our justice, our sanctification, our redemption (St. Aelred)." She, like our earthly moms, has the mother's touch. At the Annunciation, Mary shows us how to say "yes" to God's plan for our lives. In her visitation with Elizabeth, she shows us she is ready to assist us in our time of need. At the wedding of Cana, she teaches us that we can trust in God's faithfulness, that He will provide for what we need. And at the foot of the cross, Jesus gives us Mary do all of these things when He says, "Behold, your mother."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let us be confident in Mary's intercession and remember to call upon her in our time of need!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mary, Mother of God, and our Mother, pray for us!
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!

Saint John Vianney
The Cure d'Ars
1786 - 1859
Feast Day: August 4
Patronage: all #priests
After many obstacles and suffering, #SaintJohnVianney ( Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney) became one of the most celebrated parish priests in the #Catholic Church. He fought for souls in his small town in Ars, France by fasting, praying and hearing confessions until the wee hours of the morning. He converted many souls and because of this, the Devil often tempted him in the middle of the night, but he was so strong and so rooted in prayer that he was able to triumph. It is said that the Devil once told #StJohnVianney, "If there were three such priests as you, my kingdom [in France] would be ruined."

This beauty was made for my friends at Christ the Redeemer here in Houston, and is one of those pieces I lost myself in while making it. That’s one of the best things about making art — losing oneself in the process, being brought into a sacred mental space where it’s more about cooperation than struggle, and where the ego is silenced. ⚓️❤️

Saint Lydia Purpuraria
1st Century
Feast Day: August 3
Patronage: dyers
#SaintLydia was Saint Paul's first known #convert and the seller of purple cloth, as mentioned in the New Testament:
On the Sabbath, we went outside the city gate along the river where we thought there would be a place of prayer. We sat and spoke with the women who had gathered there. One of them, a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, from the city of Thyatira, a worshiper of God, listened, and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what Paul was saying. After she and her household had been baptized, she offered us an invitation, "If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my home," and she prevailed on us. -Acts 16:13-15

Saint Peter Julian Eymard
1811-1868
Feast Day: August 2
"You receive Communion to become holy, not because you already are." #SaintPeterEymard is responsible for helping many #Catholics discover the importance of the #HolyEucharist. Born in Grenoble, France, he entered the seminary at a young age despite his father’s disapproval. After becoming very ill and almost dying, he made a miraculous recovery and was ordained to the diocesan priesthood in 1834, and later joined the Marists. Overcoming many difficulties he established the Congregation of the #BlessedSacrament and the #Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, both dedicated to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
