Born 202 years ago today, we are thankful for her determined efforts to save George Washington’s Mount Vernon starting back in 1853. • • The first American President’s historic estate was in terrible shape and in danger of being demolished for new development. Addressing an article in her local Charleston, South Carolina newspaper to the “Ladies of the South”, she implored them to “secure and retain the home and grave as a sacred spot for all coming time.” • • Shortly after mass-printing of her article, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and preservation in America as we know it was established. Today, you enjoy it as The Barton House...but before it served as a local restaurant, it was home to Dr. Barton. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His family was attracted to Salado because of rumors about a fine school (Salado College) that had opened here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dr. Barton immediately became involved in the community. He served as a trustee for the Salado College for several years and he developed a busy medical practice in Salado, where his wife Louisa would accompany him as his nurse on his rounds and she would drive the horses that pulled the buggy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When Dr. Barton passed away, Louisa provided room and board for students of the college in order to supplement her income.
