❤️Double tap if you secretly think that the cello is magical! Did you know that my cello is 200 years old? Sometimes I feel as though my cello is my BFF, but it’s only activated to talk when I put my bow on the strings. It sings soulful songs that seem to come from the heart ❤️. I would like to imagine that the songs have magic powers to heal and to transform each soul... What’s your cello story?
We are utterly humbled to be among the first ambassadors with SHAR Music's newest venture: Young Strings of America. We cannot thank enough CEO Charles Avsharian for personally seeking us out and inviting us, a crossover string quartet, to join their roster of world-class musicians representing classical music today. Thank you @sharviolinshop for supporting this wild journey we’re on: buckle up because we’re going where no classical string quartet has gone before! I’ve been spending this Easter weekend organizing my files and found this recording of Piatti Caprice no.3, I have been wanting to work on and record all the Piattis, not only to work on my technique, but also to change the people’s notion of Piatti being “a study”. Indeed, it is challenging, but it is also beautiful, and it should foremost be considered as a piece of music! Violinists play the Paganini caprices often, why do cellists not play the Piatti caprices with the same kind of musical commitment?

One thing that you’re going to read a lot of in the next coming weeks... “This is my favorite movement!” which is going to be true for every. single. movement. Dear Bach, thank you. Bach always reminds me that wallowing in my mistakes when I’m performing is just selfish. Being present and enjoying this beautiful music, is what it’s all about. Best sounding with headphones to appreciate my @lawrencewilke_cellos Gofriller model. #jsbach #IGBachChallenge #marzaoncello
How many of you at conservatory/music school walk down the practice room hallways and see the windows covered? Now, how many of you have covered the windows? ♀️ I certainly have! I used to be really ashamed of people seeing me practice - I was so afraid of sounding “bad,” and of what my peers might think. How silly is that? I came to the realization that I really want to sound bad when I practice - terrible actually. Practicing is a safe space to make all the mistakes you don’t want to make in your lesson, studio class, or performance. SO HERE ARE SOME VIDEOS OF ME MESSING UP!!! So embrace the mistakes and make them proudly! Now to the practice videos today: I am very stubborn about wanting to do this bowing in my Bach G Major prelude - I will not change them However, the steadiness of the note changes with slurs, separate bows, and string crossings are not even. I decided to isolate these. I ALSO NOTICED: my bow was most jerky when I realized that my left hand held tension. Ah, hand synchronicity. You can even see me notice that and make the change haha. Do you think by the third video that it made a difference? I see a mild difference if any - but I know, with patience and trust, that tomorrow the day after, the day after that, and so forth, that it will improve. #marzaoncello #marzapractices #jsbach
Some days, you just don’t play in tune ♀️ One of the many reasons why we practice! The words from Paul Katz, my old teacher at @necmusic still play in my head when I play Bach - try to eliminate all the “white noise” and fuzz between the notes to create the clearest, purest tones. Though it is a never ending goal for me, each time gets a tiny bit better! P.S. Today I was trying out the new camera. #JSBach #cellist #marzaoncello
Press ❤️if you love Bach! Today while listening to Suite 1 Minuet, I want to continue to share with you my very personal cello story and my cello dreams. (See my last two posts to see what I’ve shared with you so far.)
I also want to hear your cello dreams! Please share below...
Yesterday I mentioned that I became disillusioned as an artist at some point. When I was young, I was focused on perfecting the instrument and being the best that I could be as a cellist. As I got older, I was interested in going after a solo career. But then I became discouraged. My career didn’t look like the way I wanted it to. Yes I was invited to do a lot of concertos, solo and chamber music performances, and I even got invited to perform at the United Nations, but I was just not happy. I still didn’t feel like I was successful enough. I didn’t feel validated.
The truth is that outside validation never makes one feel happy or satisfied. I have to be happy with myself! So I struggled for many years and I decided to do other things; I became a Teaching Artist, I founded my own touring ensemble Classical Jam and served as Artist Director as I continued to perform regularly as a chamber musician. I even started my own online business and became a YouTube Personality. But I still felt unhappy. I felt like something was missing in my life. I felt empty.
It was then that I realized that my true gift and passion was in expressing myself with my solo cello voice. It’s not about the validations nor the perceived idea of success. It’s about truly allowing my inner voice to speak through the cello, to use it to inspire and uplift.
Well now years later, I have decided to recommit myself to music making, and let my voice be heard. I feel the most free and the most myself when I am playing, and I look forward to not only playing more here and also other social media platforms like YouTube, but I hope to play more with orchestras, solo recitals, and special projects! I am so excited for my visual album #PasionMovie to come out. It is my first step towards recommitting to what I believe my true purpose is- to move and to uplift with music .
