It's not about knowing lots of obedience commands, it's about lifestyle choices that help your dog settle down when you need them too!

Sometimes when we have high energy and high drive dogs, we can feel trapped in a cycle of "exhausting the dog through exercise" and the finding we have been building endurance in our dog, instead of quicker calmness.
I am the first to agree that yes, dogs need exercise! Dogs also need opportunities to fulfill their drive and genetic specialities, so that they can have a full and well rounded life.
BUT in addition to that, we do our dogs and our families a disservice if we don't teach our dogs how to be calm and patient. Sometimes it's raining, sometimes it's too hot, and sometimes you just may not be feeling up to the amount of exercise your dog needs right now. That's ok to postpone to a little bit later when your dog understands the calming and settling effects of duration work like long down/stays or the Place Command.
Long haired Wiemeraner Ava is working on doing a whole lot of nothing! And that means she's not doing a whole lot of barking or anxious pacing that she's accustomed too.
Make sure to check in the comments for the next photo - 15 minutes as after this pic was taken..BOOM sleepy weimy :)

Our first evening pack walk of the summer included all lot of rain, but we still got get some awesome group work done as well as a little stroll! Thanks so much to everyone who came out and we look forward to a less rainy event in July!
Elliot did great and I can't wait for him to show his family his skills on Tuesday :) #calmdogscrazyworld #orlandodogs #orlandofl #dogstagram #puppy #balancedtraining #dogtraining #pitbull #gsd #labrador #doodle #goldenretriever #rescuedog #oviedofl #winterparkfl #floridadogtrainer #orlandodogtrainer #centralflorida #centralfloridadogtrainer #floridadogs #windermerefl #taketheleadk9training #boardandtrain #adoptdontshop #ecollartraining #disneydogs #ucfdogs #lakemaryfl #sanfordfl
Momma Finn sent me an email asking for some advice about their other dog at home. The older dog at home is still pretty rowdy, jumps up, and goes bonkers on walks - so she asked, after seeing how great Finn has been doing, if the e-collar would help with those things, too.
My answer was that yes, e-collar training would be suepr helpful for those things! However, e-collar training isn't something you should just "start" from scratch. Infact, there are many pre-requesets needed to accomplish first before beginning an e-collar program.
You don't just put an e-collar on and start pushing buttons. You actually have to spend many sessions building a reliable foundation on leash (with food if the dog is driven) before starting any e-collar work. They have to have an understanding of the commands you are giving them, before the e-collar is ever introduced.
Here are a few links to my YouTube channel where you can see the process of on-leash training, followed by ecollar training, and then finally using the remote collar to help with reactivity!

It's so important to follow the steps, not take short cuts, and not move too fast! The e-collar can be an excellent tool, but please make sure to train responsibly or work with a professional to help you and your pup!

I know, Bailey, I know - you were bred to run!
But you can't run all the time. Sometimes you've got to be calm and still :) #husky

Here's a little update for the Mowgli fans!
It's funny because just this morning I put together a little history of my corgi Mowgs on IG stories. I shared some moments from the past, going into the struggles we had between he and Ramses the greyhound, as a way to express how my dogs fighting cause me to change how I loved them and lived with them...ultimately healing my pack, becoming a strong leader, and jump starting what Take the Lead is today :) As many of you know Mowgli's journey didn't stop there! After becoming the best dude, my most reliable and trained dog he spent years as my ESA - traveling with me to dog training seminars as my assistant and being part of rehabilitation of many other dogs. But as he got older (he's almost 13!), he was less mobile and becoming more painful and arthritic, causing his desire to be out in a busy dog yard to be less and less, which meant he spent a lot more time inside and not out with us, or the pack.
When my mom passed away a little over a year ago, their family dog Runt soon followed her to the rainbow bridge within a week, leaving my Dad far from myself and my sister...and all alone. My husband Jorge had the amazing idea of offering to see if my dad may want Mowgs to come live with him...and it was a match made in heaven.
My Dad and Mowgs are two peas in a pod! They travel all over the country together (including rode trips to come see us ), have frequent lunch dates on the patio at one of my parent's favorite restaurants, enjoy lounging around in the pool, and playing a game of chuck it with his recently acquired wheels! (Mowgli became pretty lame shortly after he left here, and my Dad has been doing some amazing stuff - acupuncture, laser therapy, and getting him those wheels -to keep him moving and full of life!) And just recently my Dad and Mowgli shared their time with some preschool kiddos! "Mr. Don" brought a book from the library about a puppy who has a wheelchair to talk about the importance of acceptance, kindness, and how disabilities don't make us different from one another. If you are e-collar training your dog, you know the importance of making sure you have good contact during training!
Without it, your messages will be inconsistent - which can make things confusing for your dog and frustrating for you! Contact is the difference between the ability to influence your dog off leash at a time of need or not...so make sure your equipment is right for your dog's coat!
We have a variety of breeds in training now which have provided a variety of contact points :) The "winged" points are amazing for the samoyed's long and thick hair, but while the regular long tips are working good for a doodle with a long coat. Our corgis don't have long hair, but it is very plush - the thick haired points work great!
They have so many great accessories at @ecollartechnologies , including hypoallergenic contact points for dogs with sensitive skin or metal allergies!

Too often people are running behind their dogs "putting out fires" for their behavior. Apologizing for their dog jumping on people, barking, or even biting them. Possibly they are cleaning up messes after the dog has gotten in the garbage, chewed up things, slobbered all of the window barking at neighbors. Maybe they are applying compresses to their own shoulders after being drug down the street by their dog or their throat is horse from trying to get their dog to come back.
Improving all of those behaviors start with the little things you do with your dog. Do you represent authority and someone of value to listen to, or just a buddy? Can your dog look at you and say "she seems to have things under control" or are they always taking the lead and impulsively choosing what to do.
Setting clear expectations, boundaries, and rules are vital to a healthy relationship with a dog. Much like a balanced meal includes some substance (and not just dessert!), your relationship with your dog (especially if they have bad behaviors) can not be just lovey, buddy stuff. You must be a provider, share important information about what is or isn't ok, and take some proactive action in their choices.
Would you leave a toddler unsupervised in a yard, or let them do whatever they want all day without being involved? No way! To have our dog's behavior change, we must change too. It's important that we love them by leading them, and correct nonsense, look for small moments of pushy behavior and set daily boundaries with obedience work, polite threshold behavior, structured walks (and subsequent consequence for not following through) in our lives with our dogs. Loving them is not the hard part--leading them in a way that they make better chocies and we become proactive and relevant in those things is. Hey gang, meet Purdey! This pretty lab is joining us for a 2 week board and train to work on her manners and listening skills! She's had some e-collar training already, working on her retrieve in the field, but her owner is still struggling with her overexcited behaviors when she sees people, not coming when called, counter surfing, and often being in her own world! Stay tuned for more with this lady :) #calmdogscrazyworld #orlandodogs #orlandofl #dogstagram #puppy #balancedtraining #dogtraining #pitbull #gsd #labrador #doodle #goldenretriever #rescuedog #oviedofl #winterparkfl #floridadogtrainer #orlandodogtrainer #centralflorida #centralfloridadogtrainer #floridadogs #windermerefl #taketheleadk9training #boardandtrain #adoptdontshop #ecollartraining #disneydogs #ucfdogs #lakemaryfl #sanfordfl #gundog
