Happy World Oceans Day. We are at a tipping point for the health of our oceans. I have seen it first hand. Bleached coral reefs in the remote South Pacific. Uninhabited islands hundreds of miles from civilization are covered in plastic trash and emaciated migrating whales are struggling to make their journey. With all of these challenges, beauty abounds. This female gray was very happy to see us. Please commit to do one thing to reduce your single use plastic consumption. This beauty and the millions of other creatures that call our oceans home will thank you. . #esmithimages #worldoceansday #earthfocus #whales #whalewatching #whale #whaletail #whaleface #graywhale #animales #animalface #animalplanet #animalkingdom #wildlifeplanet #wildlifephotographer #wildandfree #wildlife #saveouroceans #saveourseas #cetacean #oceanphotography #baja #bajacalifornia #natgeowild #natgeotravel #natgeoyourshot #lensbible #losangelesphotographer #ballena #mexico

Wishing you all a wonderful World Oceans Day! I’m so blessed to spend nearly every day on the pacific - the largest and deepest of all the oceans worldwide. So many amazing creatures call this place home, and it’s up to us to do our part to ensure the protection of these vital ecosystems. This humpback whale gifted me with one of the most memorable encounters I’ve ever had out on the big blue - swipe to see the video! HAPPY WORLD OCEANS DAY — I couldn’t think of a better picture to post for today. I still close my eyes from time to time and relive this moment. Swimming along side watching this beauties body language to see where she might go lead me to being in such a great spot! I don’t believe in rushing or forcing myself into a position to take a photo. I feel it’s pretty damn disrespectful. How would we like it if someone was running around shoving cameras in our faces? Anyways that’s a rant for another post! This moment happened so quickly but luckily I can replay it over and over again in my mind. Watching this massive humpback glide through water that was shallower than she was in length was one of the most amazing moments in my life thus far. I hope that all the education and tools that are out there for us all to learn keeps beings like this on our planet for centuries to come so other can continue to be captivated just like I have been many of times. Happy World Oceans Day everyone!!!!!

Last month, a beluga wearing a harness was found off the coast of Norway. It is assumed that the whale escaped from Russia’s navy, as his harness had a slot for a GoPro and a label connected to St. Petersburg. The beluga is very friendly and was first discovered begging fishermen for food around Ingøya, a Norwegian island located 415 km (258 mi) from a Russian naval base in Murmansk. Russia actively trains and houses captive dolphins for military operations and has captured belugas in the past for similar use, thus this conclusion is not far-stretched. Nobody has claimed this animal as of yet. The tight harness was successfully removed by locals. The beluga, nicknamed Hvaldimir, also appears to not hunt for himself, so Norwegian Orca Survey has been granted exclusive permission by Norwegian officials to feed and care for the lone cetacean until a more permanent solution is agreed upon. Hvaldimir has remained in Hammerfest, Norway, since May 1. This is an animal dependent upon humans; he was likely captured from the wild as a calf or born in captivity. To avoid confinement in a tank with other belugas, an ideal situation would be for Hvaldimir to join two retired captive belugas in the the first beluga sanctuary soon set to be established in Iceland. Neither Norway nor Iceland hold cetaceans in captivity. Caption: @sevenseasoffreedom Photos & videos: Taneli Kivelä (@tanelik) and Jørgen Ree Wiig (@wiiiig)

The Humpback Whales story is a beautiful example of what conservation can accomplish when people come together to care about their home the beings we share it with Though still considered an endangered species today, Humpback populations have bounced back the most strongly out of all the whales since the ban on whale hunting nearly 33 years ago. You can see these beauties from the Atlantic coast of Florida all the way to the Arctic on their migration from breeding grounds to feeding grounds, and there's another population on the west coast who follow a similar path! However, while their numbers may be higher now, there is evidence from scientists that indicates the negative impacts of sea ice melting on Humpbacks through the collapse of the arctic food chain pillar; krill. Humpbacks travel thousands of miles every year to reach the krill rich waters of the north, but these millions of krill are only there if the sea ice holds long enough for the little crustaceans to breed and live under the ice for months without disturbance. Some research has shown a 30% decline in density in some areas such as the Scotia Sea since the 1980s, and with the sea ice melting early and consistently receding year after year, krill may not have the ability to protect themselves and feed long enough to grow to maturity. For the larger animals who depend on these regular spawns to get them through their long journeys, this would become a life changing problem! The polar regions may feel far beyond us, but they are not beyond our influence. Sharing your passion and using your voice to call this issue to attention as well as the facts around climate change is so important to the future, for both ourselves and our children. Our planet needs you, and the millions of people who have already taken up the mission to save our home need you too! Keep sharing what you love and advocating for political change, while supporting organizations like @pacificwhalefoundation @oceanconservancy and @sealegacy who are promoting change at all levels of society! ___________________________________ #whale #whales #whaletail #humpback #humpbackwhale #whalewatching #whalewatch #whalelover #whaleart
