Today’s Inspiration: Donald Brooks In the 1960’s the NYT declared that there were “3 B’s in fashion”- Blass, Beene, and Donald Brooks. Brooks is especially interesting for 2 reasons- he designed most of his own (outrageous) textiles, AND his career took the opposite course from most costume designers. He started in fashion and worked his way into costume, when the reverse was the more usual career trajectory. (Capote’s B&W Ball, from my earlier post? Brooks designed more dresses worn to that party than any other designer. Kaftans for DAYS.) Brooks was one of the post-WWII designers responsible for creating the “American Look”. Born in Connecticut in 1928, Brooks started as an art student before attending Yale (drama) where he decided to make his career in apparel design. He trained at FIT & Parsons, where he returned later in his career to teach design for more than 40 years. His first fashion job was dressing windows for Lord & Taylor, which got him his next job, taking over for Claire McCardell at Townley Frocks in 53. Though his brand was initially financed by Ben Shaw (think Blass, Beene & Halston), by the mid 60’s he was one of the few American designers to have financial control of his business. In 62 he was one of the founders of the CFDA. Brooks opened his own shop in 1965, the same year he began to design for stage and screen. Over the course of his career he designed more than 3500 costumes, won an Emmy, and was nominated for a Tony & 3 Oscars. He dressed ladies like Jackie Kennedy, Babe Paley, Carol Burnett, Liza Minelli and Julie Andrews (Star!). He was known for his love of color and his incredible prints, as well as his tasteful (and relatively simply cut) dresses.
