#Repost @cfdlab (@get_repost) ・・・ Laminar Flow Reversibility! Ink is squirted into a fluid and mixed in until it disappears. By precisely undoing the motions in the reverse direction, the ink becomes unmixed! The demonstration seems to defy thermodynamics in that it appears that entropy decreases, but in actuality the reversible mixing is made possible by ensuring that the mixing/unmixing is done without turbulence. The space between two transparent and concentric cylinders is filled with a viscous fluid (glycerine for example). One or more lines of colored fluid are also injected into this fluid reservoir, parallel to the axis of the cylinder(s). When the inside cylinder is slowly rotated (by means of a crank) with respect to the outside cylinder, the lines of colored fluid become mixed with the rest of the fluid. Several revolutions renders the mixture completely clear and "mixed". If one now reverses the direction of rotation, the colored fluid lines reappear by "unmixing" after the same number of rotations in the opposite sense. Based on OpenFOAM a partitioned, strongly coupled solver for transient FSI simulations with independent meshes for the fluid and solid domains has been implemented. For several variants of solvers and models runtime and scalability analyses have been performed. These results indicate that updating the CFD mesh is the most significant operation with respect to strong scalability. The 2018 Recipient Of The Andreas Acrivos Dissertation Award in Fluid Dynamics is Dr. Shabnam Raayai-Ardakani. . Dr. Ardakani becomes only the second woman in history to win the prestigious award. . Dr. Shabnam Raayai-Ardakani received her B.S in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 2011. She received her S.M. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT under the supervision of professor Mary Boyce working on mechanics of graded wrinkling. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT under the supervision of professor Gareth McKinley. In her Ph.D., inspired by the ribs on denticles of shark skin she studied the method of geometry mediated drag reduction using riblet and wrinkled textured surfaces. . She is currently a post-doctoral associate at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT where she is working on developing a volume-controlled cavity expansion technique inspired by Cavitation Rheology for probing the mechanical properties of soft, and biological materials. . Dr. Raayai-Ardakani has accepted a fellowship at the Rowland Institute at Harvard University and will join the institute in summer 2019 as a principal investigator. . Nasa has taken a series of history-making photographs. The pictures show shockwaves from two supersonic aircraft interacting mid-flight. Capturing these shockwaves interacting mid-air in a photograph is important as it will give researchers information about how these shockwaves work, which could have a big impact on designing supersonic aircraft in the future.
