A miniature painting from an illustrated version of the Baburnama from the late 16th century, discussing the animals found in India.
The Baburnama (Book of Babur) is considered the first autobiography or memoir written in the Islamic tradition as well as in Turkic cultures. It was written by the first Mughal emperor Babur in the Chagatai language, his mother tongue, with Persian influences. The book is more than just an account of his life, conquests, and rule. Babur's lively, rich, and frank personality is revealed through his personal style of writing. Like a historian, anthropologist and scientist, he makes many interesting observations about culture, society, economics, geography, flora, and fauna.
Here is an excerpt from the diary, showing Babur's view of India: "It is a wonderful country. Compared with our countries it is a different world; its mountains, rivers, jungles and deserts, its towns, its cultivated lands, its animals and plants, its peoples and their tongues, its rains, and its winds, are all different...Once the water of Sind is crossed, everything is in the Hindustan way--land, water, tree, rock, people and horde, opinion and custom."
