The Northern Rhône wines from a recent Rhône wine tasting. Missing from the photo is the 1985 Chave Hermitage Blanc, which had a sweet nose of blood orange liqueur, honey, nuts, and marzipan. Sweet and silky smooth on the palate. The 1988 Chave Hermitage Rouge was the consensus wine of the night, though it is still a notch below the 1989 and other-worldly 1990 Chave. The 1989 Chapoutier Ermitage La Pavillon was almost equally strong, with more barnyard, barbecue smoke, and bacon fat. Refined but more brawny than the Chave. The 1999 Chapoutier Ermitage l’Ermite showed off a more exotic nose of anise, brown spices, and cinnamon. Not as dynamic on the palate, which lacked the complexity of the aromatics. The 2003 Guigal La Landonne was superb, and possibly the best wine of the evening; it just wasn’t as mature and interesting as the older Chave at this young age. This is a knockout that will be in a perfect spot in 10 years. I still prefer the 1999 La Landonne by a small margin.
Always such a great experience to sip some Syrah from Côte-Rôtie, even young. We wanted to try this 2015 that revealed very promising. Superb freshness on the nose with many black fruits, spices, liquorice, and blue flowers. Very expressive after a 2-hour decanting. The palate gives big body and structure, but remains fresh too, with nice grain and good tannins. Fantastic how approachable this wine can be already. Will be even better in a few years of course, with the superb potential of 2015 vintage. Les Bécasses remains a nice reference in the appellation, I recommend it to those who have never tasted! Cheers!

2001 Mordoree Reine des Bois is still young, with depth of flavor, spicy, full bodied and fresh.

2000 Vieille Julienne Reserve is off the charts! Mouth filling, opulent, long, fresh and concentrated, the peppery fruit really lingers here.

1997 Chapoutier Pavillon... I know it’s an Hermitage. The wine is starting to show its spicy, red fruit, olive, pepper, herb and flint character. Full bodied and concentrated, the oak has faded and the wine is really coming alive. .

Such a young wine with whiff of oldness reminiscent of dusty books. Elegantly powerful but with abundant tannins now. Much time is needed to mellow this somewhat boisterous youth. The Chapoutier quality is clearly evident.

La truffe Melanosporum et St Jacques d’Hokkaido en feuilletage | Sauce vermouth | Cresson | : Les lamelles de truffes d’un demi centimètre d’épaisseur sont suées dans un beurre demi sel et déglacées au Madère Sercial Barbeito 10 ans. Entourées de lamelles de St Jacques japonaises, jeunes épinards et un feuilletage au beurre frais. La sauce consiste en une réduction de Vermouth Dollin extra dry et échalotes grises, velouté par une crème d’Isigny et brisures de truffes. En accord les blancs de @m_chapoutier issus des plus belles parcelles d’hermitage. Bonne table, et large soif !
