Ants. B ‍♂️ spent ages today hunting for ants. It seems it’s a good activity to keep a preschooler busy! I looked up some facts for him and found out: An ant can carry 50 times over its own body weight. Ants don’t have ears and some don’t have eyes. He was fascinated that ants “listen” by feeling vibrations from the ground through their feet. Lots of stamping went on in an attempt to talk to them! The queen ant is in charge and spends her time laying eggs. The males job is to reproduce. And the rest of the females build the mounds and collect all the food for the rest of the ants. He was fascinated by the thought of all their tunnels underneath us. I think maybe I should get an ant world for him. But the thought of having that in the house makes me itch! Please don’t help my kids. Have you read the article ‘Please don’t help my kids’ by Kate Bassford Baker? It’s popped up on my news feed lots since having my son and I’ve found it inspiring. A couple of paragraphs from the article are: “I am not sitting here, 15 whole feet away from my kids, because I am too lazy to get up. I am sitting here because I didn’t bring them to the park so they could learn how to manipulate others into doing the hard work for them. I brought them here so they could learn to do it themselves.” And another “I want them to climb that ladder without any help, however well-intentioned, from you. Because they can. I know it. And if I give them a little space, they will soon know it, too.” If you haven’t read it, have a google. Where possible I try to resist helping B ‍♂️ physically when he’s playing. For example to climb, to get down from where he’s climbed, to balance. I’ve found it makes him safer if I leave him to discover what he’s capable of doing himself. It’s made him learn quicker, has fostered his determination and helped him to understand his boundaries. If he wants to get to the top of something, he has to figure out how. If he wants to get down, he has to figure out how. If he needs help when playing I’ll help him verbally before I help physically. The other day I posted an image of suggestions of what to say instead of “be careful”. It’s so easy to call out “be careful” to B ‍♂️ when he’s playing. But it won’t help him be more aware of what he’s doing and it won’t help him to solve a problem. This article and that image go nicely together. What are your thoughts? I read yesterday about ‘nature-deficit disorder’ and children becoming disconnected from the natural world. And I’ve just seen a friends post showing a lovely nature book they are reading for #30dayswild. But the book is all about the nature based words removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary, called the 'Lost Words'. Fern, magpie, acorn, conker and bluebell are among the lost words! Whaaaat?! Surely these are words every child needs to know? Since when do children not need to know about conkers and acorns?! If these words are being removed from a Junior dictionary, which is meant to teach our kids, what hope do we have?! Yes I’m being overly dramatic, but why is there less of an emphasis on nature and nature education now? How can we get children connected with nature? Well we can start by simply getting outside and giving them freedom to play and to explore. “There must be provision for the child to have contact with nature; to understand and appreciate the order, the harmony and the beauty in nature.” Maria Montessori. Is the weather today putting you off getting outside and enjoying nature? If it is, here’s some inspiration from B ‍♂️ to get outside whatever the weather. BeWILDerwood, Norfolk. We had high hopes for @bewilderwood_norfolk... and it smashed them! One of the best days out we’ve had. As you go in, you can take the boat trip into the main part of the park. B ‍♂️ loved this! It really raised the excitement levels. Once inside there’s treehouses, slides, zip wires, playgrounds, mazes, sandpit, crafts, face painting and story telling... and so much more! It’s set in beautiful woodland which is perfect for exploring. One of B’s ‍♂️ favourite parts of the day was listening to storyteller Jim. He told us tales from the magical children's books written by the creator of BeWILDerwood, Tom Blofeld. They were very interactive and lots of fun. We bought the book on our way out which we are enjoying. We went on a wet, chilly, midweek day in June and it was very quiet due to the miserable weather. Perfect for us as we had lots of things to ourselves. There’s places to buy food and drinks. Or you can take a picnic. We bought our tickets the day before online so they were slightly cheaper. I wish Bewilderwood was a little bit closer as I’m sure we’d be buying a yearly pass! We had such a good time. I’d definitely recommend it!
