— “I met #GaryGalante (August 25, 1953 - December 30, 1995) when we both went to the #ChelseaGym in the 1980s. He was a soft-spoken little bodybuilder with a high voice and biting wit. I became part of his posse of muscle guys, all gone now, who went to ‘The Saint’ together every Saturday night.

Surprisingly, Italian Gary was an expert on American Indian culture. He'd lived with and was adopted by a tribe and had been a curator at several museums including @metmuseum. #DianaVreeland run-ins as well. It was a hidden scholarly side you'd barely guess.
.
Later as Gary became ill and frail, we'd spend afternoons where I'd type articles he'd dictate for various academic publications. In his hospital room, we'd translate food choices to French and discuss them like we were at Chanterelle, site of our last dinner together. We did what we could to make pain seem normal.
.
When Gary passed, the arrangements for his funeral were made by his lifelong friend who'd become an Upper East Side society woman. I helped her contact the gay men and she asked me to speak at his funeral.
.
The chapel was packed. Immediately before my turn, a man wearing jeans and a brightly colored western shirt rose and stood at the front of the church. He had long dark hair covered in a cascade of feathers. He quietly stated he was from the Indian Tribe who’d adopted Gary years before and he'd traveled to NYC from Oklahoma. He was there to sing a song comforting and guiding Gary's soul. He opened his mouth and released the most amazing sound, above human, not like the voice of a single man. The notes filled the church, pressing against the roof and slipping inside your pockets. Even after he stopped, the song lingered in your ears before drifting on to continue it’s job elsewhere.

I couldn’t tell you what I rose and said next. It was a tough act to follow. I might have talked about how courageous Gary was for such a small, funny man. I might have talked about the nicknames we had for everyone (Gary had become "Judith Traherne").
