This past weekend, our freshman students continued a seven year tradition by spending time at the Chickahominy Tribe Pow Wow. Christchurch School’s partnership with the Chickahominy Tribe serves many purposes: helping our neighbors, experiencing their culture on and off their tribal grounds, being able to spend meaningful time with the assistant chief of the tribe, Wayne Adkins, and developing an awareness of sustainability projects that CCS has pioneered. The Pow Wow, in combination with the upcoming immersion trip, have consistently proved to make a powerful impact on our students both inside and outside of the classroom! #ReadyForMore #SetYourCourse #Since1921 : @meghan.r.mcneill

This journey has been long, hard, and so emotional. I gave up pre-med in college because I didn’t think I was smart enough. I competed with classmates who had so much more science preparation and exposure in high school and it felt like I was chasing after a pipe dream. I stepped away from pre-med to learn a new language and study abroad while exploring other career options. But I felt guilty for giving up and I kept coming back to medicine, so I decided to do post-bac program. I had so much anxiety leading up to the start of classes that my mom told me, “You’re completely capable. You just need to calm down.” And she was right! I crushed all my courses and even became a General Chemistry TA! ⚗️‍ But my confidence was still shaken when it came to applying. I thought maybe my application wasn’t strong enough because I was still comparing myself to what I thought was the “model pre-med.” I almost took an extra year after my post-bac to make my application “stronger” by trying to check all the boxes I thought needed to be checked: more shadowing, more clinical volunteering, more research. But once again, my mom corrected my course and I submitted my applications. Now here I am, in a white coat at a top medical school. ‍⚕️ The next 4 years (and beyond) will be another huge challenge but I keep reminding myself of all the times I thought I couldn’t do it and did it anyway! So please remember that YOU ARE CAPABLE. There is no perfect application. Do the things that you are PASSIONATE about and that will shine through in your applications and interviews. Admissions committees can smell BS from a mile away. Stay true to you and NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS!!!! One of the true highlights of creating a new tour is discovering incredible people often forgotten by history. Today it was learning about May Edward Chinn (April 15, 1896 - December 1, 1980). Born to a former escaped slave father, William Lafayette, and a daughter of slaves and a Chickahominy Native American, Lulu Ann, who was the live-in cook at the Long Island mansion of the Tiffany family. May Edward grew up under an umbrella of Tiffany family patronage. They taught her German & French and she learned to play piano. In the 1920s she accompanied Paul Robeson on stage. May Edward received her B.S. from Teachers College in 1921 and was the first Black woman to receive an M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College (1926). The Rockefeller Institute offered her a fellowship, but withdrew the offer upon learning of her race. Instead, she became the first Black woman to intern at Harlem Hospital. She later opened a private practice and earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Columbia University (1935). No hospital would grant her practicing privileges until Harlem Hospital did in 1940, in part due to Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia’s push for integration following the 1935 Harlem Riot. To learn more about Harlem in the early 20th century join our Historic Harlem tour. We are currently working on a new tour for student groups “STEAM in the Village: Artistry, Invention & Exploration”. It will arrive in September. #bigoniontours #walkingtour #harlem #harlemhospital #mayedwardchinn #nychistory #blackhistory #slavery #chickahominy #bellevuehospital #teacherscollege #columbiauniversity #fiorellolaguardia #blackwomen #steam #stem #studentactivities
