Well, I finally did it. I cracked open the emu eggs. The result was upsetting but also very interesting. Today was day 71 for the emu eggs, so it was time to open them up. The first egg was the one that was wiggling a few weeks ago and stopped. When I cracked it open, there was a fully developed emu chick but he didn’t absorb any of the yolk. So he had some time before he would’ve hatched. It’s likely that he died because of hot or cold spots in the incubator. Egg 2 never even started developing. Although seeing my little emu was super upsetting, it was very interesting to see inside the egg. We were so close to having an emu I’ll definitely try again next season!!

Our chicks are due to hatch tomorrow! we are very eggcited. Out of the 24 eggs we gave them they have only pushed out 5, so we have high hopes for lots of babies. Let’s hope the majority are girls so we can have even more colours in our basket.
