‍ Anatomy of an Effective Boundary Statement ‍⁣ ⁣ As I’ve been creating these boundary scripts for you all, I’ve been realizing just how limitless the possibilities are in terms of the different kinds of boundaries we can set ⁣ ⁣ Boundaries are completely unique to each and every individual and are also situation-specific. For example, my boundaries are going to be different than yours, and you might need to set certain boundaries with one friend that you might not need to set with a different friend. It all depends on your needs, your life, and your values ⁣ ⁣ This past day, I was wracking my brain trying to come up with the common factors that make up all boundary-setting statements, so that you could use that framework to create your personal boundaries as they arise in different situations ‍♀️⁣ ⁣ Above is my version of a step-by-step breakdown of how to create effective statements, that will help you compassionately set your boundaries with others ⁣ ⁣ Remember, you should also always have consequences to back up your boundaries, because without those you can set boundaries all day and no one will actually feel pressured enough to honor them. Tuesday Inspiration ⁣ ⁣ Today, I wanted to take a little break from the heavy work we’ve been doing on boundaries, to make room for a bit of inspiration⁣ ⁣ Sometimes as children, we aren’t asked about what really matters most to us. More likely, our needs and desires are pushed aside as we are expected to fall in line with our parents’ needs and desires ⁣ ⁣ So, when we grow into our adult selves, this childhood experience can make us feel like we don’t know who we are, what we want, or where we stand on our values and goals ‍♀️⁣ ⁣ If we want to feel strong, centered, and confident in ourselves, the first step is taking time to really understand what matters the most to us. It helps sooo much! . ASD, avoidant/dismissive relating styles, shame attacks, anxiety, dissociation.... . When you’re *away* it can feel impossible to return. When your partner, parent, child is *in it,* it can feel terrifying or maddening. . *Being with* can feel so healing (for both people). Easing our own panic as we allow our person to safely return to us (to themselves) in their own timeline, provides loving nurturance, safety, and a deeper connection for the relationship (and each individual involved). #overwhelmed #dissociation #relationshipgoals

I say this so often in session with clients. It may seem simple, but if we really slow down with this statement and recognize how our caregivers dealt with emotions, something can start to click. . . Remembering how our caregivers processed emotions - or rather didn’t process them - helps us to recognize what we ACTUALLY learned about emotions. THIS is our programming. . . If our caregiver was super angry and lashed out all the time or was violent, we might take in that anger is scary and dangerous and harms people. So, every time WE feel anger, we feel the need shut it down. . . If we were shamed by a teacher for crying too much, then we might learn that crying is something to hide, something that bothers and upsets people and causes them to disconnect from us. . . A LOT of my own therapy as a client involves uncovering the many messages I internalized about different feelings growing up. A lot of these messages continued to play out into adulthood, which I now can go back with compassion and unpack and reprocess, and rewrite.
