Each page of this book is made of one of forty-nine unique species of plants native to the Nachusa Grasslands in Franklin Grove, Illinois. The Grasslands is most likely the traditional territory of the Sauk and Meskwaki. One of the largest and most biodiverse prairie ecosystems in the state, the Nachusa Grasslands contain 700 native plant species and 180 species of birds, as well as bison, which were reintroduced in 2014 (and now number 107). Known as the Prairie State, Illinois once contained around 22 million acres of prairie, but only about one-tenth of this land remains. Although the artist listed the plants in English, many of the plants used in this book have Meskwaki names. . The Nature Conservancy commissioned 49 Prairie Plants in 2011 to honor the volunteers who have worked for the Nachusa Grasslands since its establishment as a preserve in 1986. For this project Meindertsma worked with Andrea Peterson, a local artist specializing in printmaking, paper, and book arts, to make paper from each type of grass. After sorting 1,000 discarded sweaters for her Fibre Market project, designer Christien Meindertsma shredded the sweater and used the fibers to develop a new yarn to produce a bespoke Donegal tweed, made with a family-run company of weavers in Ireland. The first batch is shown here used as an upholstery fabric for one of her Flax Chairs. .......
