Say hello to the 'Reiwa' era, and Japan's new emperor! Emperor Naruhito’s ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, the oldest monarchy in the world, ushers in a historic chapter for Japan. Today Naruhito, who is the 126th emperor of Japan takes the place of his father Akihiro who stepped down yesterday on the last day of the ‘Heisei’ era. Akihiro was the first Japanese monarch to abdicate in over 200 years. "I want to earnestly fulfill my duties by always being close to the people, and sharing with them their joys and sorrows", shared Naruhito. The new emperor's desire bodes well for the ‘Reiwa’ era, which means ‘beautiful harmony’. We wish Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako all the best as they begin their reign!

Today marks the final day of the Heisei era, as Emperor Akihito abdicates from his role to hand the imperial title to his son, Crown Prince Naruhito. For many in Japan, today is a day of poignant nostalgia, of remembering all that has transpired during this 30-year period and reflecting on Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko's legacy. During the Heisei era, which saw multiple natural disasters ravage Japan, the Emperor and Empress redefined their roles as symbols of the state by compassionately comforting victims, and marginalized groups. As in this picture taken in Rikuzentakata, one of the areas devastated by the 2011 disasters, we watch the sun set on the Heisei era, and wait with hope for what comes next in the time of Reiwa.

Pt.2...The wedding finally took place as a traditional Shinto ceremony on 10 April 1959. The couple have three children. Contrary to the tradition that the children of the imperial family should be separated from their parents and placed with private tutors, Crown Prince Akihito and his wife Crown Princess Michiko again broke precedent from the start by preferring to raise their children instead of entrusting them to the care of court chamberlains; the Crown Princess even breastfed. Upon the death of Emperor Shōwa on 7 January 1989, Crown Princess Michiko's husband became the 125th Emperor of Japan, and she became empress consort. The new Emperor and Empress were enthroned (Sokui Rei Seiden no Gi) at the Tokyo Imperial Palaceon 12 November 1990. Since their enthronement, the imperial couple have visited many countries, and have done much to make the Imperial Family more visible and approachable in contemporary Japan. They also tried to be close to the people, visiting the 47 prefectures of Japan. Her official duties, apart from visits to other countries, are to assist her husband at events and ceremonies, both within and outside the Imperial Palace and she has been at the Emperor's side everywhere. The Japanese government announced in December 2017 that Emperor Akihito would abdicate on 30 April 2019. After the abdication, Empress Michiko will received new title of Jōkōgō and move to the Togu Palace on the Akasaka Estate, upon abdication. #japaneseroyalty #japaneseroyals #empressofjapan #empressmichiko #emperorakihito #royals #royalty #royalconsort #chrysanthemumthrone

December 9, 1963 – Birth of Masako Owada, wife of Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan. Masako is the wife of Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan, who is the eldest son of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko and the heir apparent to the Chrysanthemum Throne. She is a member of the Imperial House of Japan through marriage. Should the Crown Prince ascend the throne as expected upon his father's abdication, Masako will become empress consort. Princess Masako has suffers from emotional disorders due to the pressure to produce a male heir and adjusting to life in the Imperial Family. In late 2001, she gave birth to her only child, a daughter: Aiko, Princess Toshi. The birth of a daughter, which occurred more than eight years after their marriage, sparked lively debate in Japan about whether The Imperial Household Law of 1947 should be changed from that of agnatic primogeniture to either cognatic or absolute primogeniture, which would allow a woman to succeed to the Chrysanthemum Throne. A government-appointed panel of experts submitted a report on 25 October 2005, recommending that the Imperial Succession Law be amended to permit absolute primogeniture. Plans to change the male-only law of Imperial succession were shelved after it was announced in February 2006 that Masako's brother-in-law and his wife, Prince and Princess Akishino, were expecting their third child. On 6 September 2006, Princess Akishino gave birth to a son, Hisahito, who is third-in-line to the Chrysanthemum Throne under the current law, after his uncle, the Crown Prince, and his father, Prince Akishino. #japaneseroyalty #japaneseroyals #emperorakihito #empressmichiko #princeakishino #crownprincenaruhito #masakoowada #crownprincessofjapan #asianroyalty #asianroyals #royals #royalty #chrysanthemumthrone #imperialhouseofjapan
